BROOKHAVEN — Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop M confirmed a Thursday morning wreck resulted in a fatality Friday morning. MHP Public Affairs Officer Cpl. Craig James identified the victim Friday morning.

According to MHP, the wreck occurred near the Mile 38 marker Thursday morning around 8:14 a.m. MHP and KDMC responded to the crash.

A 2003 Chevrolet Express van driven by 56-year-old Hector Garcia Jr. of Brownsville, Texas, was traveling north on I-55 when it collided with a concrete bridge barrier after a rear left wheel became detached from the vehicle.

Alfonso E. Muraira of Matamoros, Mexico, a 51-year-old, was passenger of the vehicle and received fatal injuries from the crash. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The crash remains under investigation by Mississippi Highway Patrol.
