Wesson wins two over Hillcrest

WESSON – The Wesson Cobras and Lady Cobras notched a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at the Snake Pit.

The Lady Cobras defeated the Hillcrest Christian Lady Cougars 39-30.

In boys’ action, the Cobras knocked off Hillcrest 66-57 in overtime.

Wesson 39, Hillcrest 30 

The Lady Cobras dominated the Lady Cougars from Hillcrest Academy throughout the whole game as Wesson captured its fourth win of the season.

“The girls executed on offense and defense really well and this was a good team win,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman.

For the Lady Cobras, Tashay Glasper was the top scorer with nine points and six rebounds. Jashia Smith had eight points, seven rebounds and one steal. The Lady Cobras were 12-of-24 from the free throw line.

For the Lady Cougars, Jordan Bailey led with eight points. Abby Busby was the top rebounder with 10 rebounds. The Lady Cougars finished 8-of-12 from the charity line.

 Wesson 66, Hillcrest 57

The Wesson Cobras secured a big win in overtime over the Hillcrest Cougars as both teams stayed neck and neck throughout the game to end regulation at 50-50. The Cobras turned up the heat in overtime with a 16-7 run to clinch the win.

“This was a fun game to coach,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “Hillcrest defended well but my guys executed on offense and defense really well. I’m proud of their effort. It was good to get this win.”

For the Cobras, senior Anthony Jones led the way with 29 points, seven rebounds, three steals, six blocks and two assists. Junior Eric Rhymes chipped in 19 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.

For the Cougars, Thomas Caine was the top scorer with 16 points, five rebounds and two steals. Bruce Reed followed with 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Mario Asagunda was the top defender on the boards with seven rebounds and 10 points.
