Soccer going strong throughout Lincoln County, Wesson

Winter can be a brutal time to play sports outdoors, but soccer keeps carrying on with Brookhaven, Loyd Star and Wesson finishing the home stretch of their seasons.

Brookhaven

Brookhaven boys’ soccer leads the way in Lincoln County with a 7-3 overall record including wins over Loyd Star, Wesson and Lawrence County over the course of the season. However, the Panthers are on a two-game losing streak, losing to Franklin County and Loyd Star in the second matchup between the two schools earlier in December. The Panthers will face Wesson Saturday at Brookhaven High School. The Panthers defeated Wesson earlier in November by a score of 2-0 and look to sweep the season series between the two schools.

The Lady Panthers have struggled so far this season with a 2-5 overall record so far. The two wins for the Lady Panthers have both come against Lawrence County with the first matchup ending 4-1 and the second matchup ending in a 9-1 victory. The Lady Panthers enter their matchup Saturday against Wesson on a three-game losing streak, losing to Loyd Star and Franklin County twice.

First kick for the girls’ game starts at 11 a.m. and the boys’ game starts 20 minutes after the girls’ game ends.

Wesson

Wesson boys’ soccer stands at 4-9-1 on the season. Two of the Cobras’ four wins have come against Loyd Star, winning the first matchup 2-1 and the second matchup by a score of 4-1.

The Cobras are led by senior midfielder Steven Dennis, who leads the team with six goals on the season and 13 points. Senior forward Logan Channell is another scoring threat for the Cobras with four goals on the season, adding 10 points and two assists as well.

The Lady Cobras are off to a hot start this season with an 10-5 record and are coming off a win against Crystal Springs Thursday night. Before their win Thursday night, the Lady Cobras were on a three-game losing streak with losses to North Pike, Franklin County and Loyd Star. The Lady Cobras are led by the junior tandem of Kim San and Amber Brinson. Both San and Brinson lead the team with 15 goals each to lead a potent offense for Wesson. The Lady Cobras average just under three goals per game on offense and give up an average of 1.3 goals per game, led by senior goalkeeper Harmoni Ashley.

Loyd Star

The Loyd Star boys’ soccer team enters 2017 with a 4-6 overall record with their first game of the new year coming up Monday night against Pelahatchie. The Hornets have been on a roll as of late, winning two of their last three games before the Christmas break, including wins over Brookhaven and Raymond. Senior Clayton Brown leads the Hornets in scoring this season with 16 points, including seven goals and two assists. Junior goalkeeper Cullen Keene has been solid in the net for Loyd Star with 71 saves on the season and 17 goals scored against.

The Lady Hornets have been playing well this season with a 7-4 record, including a 4-1 record at home. The Lady Hornets enter the home stretch of the season on a three-game winning streak with wins over Raymond, Brookhaven and Wesson. Junior forward Madisyn Brister leads the team in scoring with 28 points, including 13 goals scored and two assists. Senior forward Lesley Walker has been a reliable second scoring option for the Lady Hornets with 25 points, including 11 goals scored and three assists.

The next games for Loyd Star come Monday night at Pelahatchie. First kick for the girls is set for 5:30 p.m. with the boys following after.
