Funeral services for Sam Cagle Smith, of Brookhaven, are Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, at 11 a.m.atMacedonia Baptist Church in Brookhaven with burial at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Dr. Garland Boyd will officiate the services with Brookhaven Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be today, Aug. 1, 2017, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral homeand will continue Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Mr. Smith, 85, died Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Diversicare Nursing Home in Brookhaven, with his loving family by his side. He was born Aug. 10, 1931, in Brookhaven, to Bert Smith and Cordie Cagle Smith. He worked for 25 years with Chevron Oil as an oil field worker and spent two years in the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. He was an active church member and a retired deacon. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Maxine Smith; son, Paul Kindle Smith; brothers, Versie Smith, Marvin Smith, Odel Smith and Morris Smith; sisters, Velma Smith, Mavis Callender, Jennie Smith Reeves and Maybell Smith; and great-grandchild, Camden Reed Shelton.

Survivors are his wife, Vertress Stewart Smith; son, Jeffrey C. Smith and wife Lupita, of Spicewood, Texas; stepson, Harrell Stewart and wife Linda of Clanton, of Alabama; chosen daughter, Judy Ballard and husband David, of Brookhaven; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
