Facing a Richland team that came into their matchup averaging 35 points-per-game, Wesson head coach Jeremy Loy was worried about his team getting into a shootout with the Rangers. The game in Richland would be a shootout of sorts on Friday night, but it would be the Cobras who provided all the firepower as they hammered Richland 47-13.

Once again it would be the punishing Cobra ground game that set the tone for Wesson as all seven of their scores came on rushing touchdowns. Dell Thigpen would put Wesson up 13-0 with an 80-yard scoring run. JaQuavion Harris would add a 55-yard rushing score in the second quarter as Wesson held a 26-7 halftime advantage. Harris, Thigpen, and Jeremiah Barlow would all score multiple rushing touchdowns for Wesson on the night.

The Wesson defense would force three turnovers and shutdown a Ranger offense that featured plenty of playmakers. “Looking at them on film, we knew we had a challenge to stop their skills players and tonight I thought our defense answered the bell,” said Loy. “We had some bend, but we didn’t break and forced turnovers when we needed them.”

As a quarterback, Wesson’s Thigpen has proven to be a more than capable passer so far this season, however Loy has been pleased to rely on a power running game. “Right now we’re getting great offensive line play and tonight that allowed us to control the clock and the game in the second half,” said Loy.

The Cobras will celebrate homecoming next Friday in Stone Stadium on the campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College as they host the Mize Bulldogs for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
