A quick-thinking delivery driver helped keep a gang of bike thieves at bay, authorities said.

“When you see something, say something,” said Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins. “You’d be surprised how much help that can be. That’s the reason they didn’t get any bikes.”

Police are still looking for at least two individuals who were caught in the act last week attempting to burglarize Brookhaven Honda.

An overnight delivery driver told police that a U-Haul was parked in his way when he tried to make his stop at the Honda dealership on Stribling Road. He said the driver moved the U-Haul, but the delivery driver suspected something was up and called police.

Officers were responding to the driver’s call when they were alerted to an alarm activation at the dealership, Collins said.

It appears the suspects broke a window with a cinder block to gain access to the store with the intention of loading motorcycles and ATVs into the U-Haul, he said.

Collins said this isn’t the first time he’s heard about a group of criminals stealing U-Hauls and hitting stores in Southwest Mississippi.

“It’s part of a little group that go from town to town. They’re doing it all over. They’re brave,” he said. “That’s why everybody has to work together. You don’t know what little bit will help us solve the case.”

Officers saw at least two individuals running toward I-55. They also discovered a stolen U-Haul truck that was taken from the Industrial Park area and abandoned on Saints Trail near the scene of the burglary attempt.

Surveillance video shows a dark colored Chevrolet or GMC with a black replacement fender on the driver’s side front as well as a second vehicle which appears to be a white four-door sedan, possibly a Toyota or Honda.

Collins said officers are also continuing to search for two full-size off-road light bars that were stolen last week from two pickups.

They’re also looking for a black GMC truck that was stolen. The GMC is an older model work truck with a Kids R Us sign on the side door.

Collins said Lincoln County residents need to be vigilant about paying attention to their surroundings and calling the police if they think something is out of the ordinary.

“People from Jackson and other places come here because it’s easy pickin’s,” he said. “They get what they want and get back on the highway and they’re gone.”
