Lady Hornets whip Sacred Heart

Loyd Star’s girls worked over Sacred Heart 65-34 Thursday night, putting a mean defense on the court that stuck the Lady Crusaders in a hole they couldn’t shoot out of.
The visiting Lady Crusaders got blanked in the second quarter, and the first half ended with the Lady Hornets on a 20-0 run going back to the end of the first. Sacred Heart managed to get their offense warmed up against Loyd Star’s reserves, who came in with around three minutes to go in the third quarter, but even the younger girls continued putting up points and the Catholics couldn’t close the gap. The freshmen from the Hornets’ junior varsity team played out the final five minutes of the game, played at the Lincoln County Invitational Basketball Tournament at Enterprise.
“They couldn’t really work the ball well against our zone. We were able to read their passes and get some turnovers,” said Loyd Star junior Christie Patterson.
While the Lady Hornets’ defense was squeezing down on Sacred Heart, their offense was wearing out the net. Patterson scored nine points and grabbed four boards from close-in, and junior teammates Sarah Britt and Meagan Poole shared the scoring lead with 11 points each.
“We hustled a lot to make the offense work. Most of our plays were run off screens, so hustling will get you there,” Poole said.
Britt had five boards and a pair of nasty blocks, while Poole blocked three shots and picked up seven rebounds.
Freshman Marleigh Bullock scored seven points, while sophomores Kelsi Foster, Taylor Smith and Carly Beth Wallace scored six each. Smith grabbed four rebounds and Wallace tossed up four assists.
Freshman Lilly Bardwell scored four points, sophomore Ta’Maria Townsend dropped in three and senior Marley Poole scored two while directing the offense. Townsend also rebounded four and threw two assists.
“The first quarter was close before we decided to start playing basketball,” said Loyd Star coach Gene Britt. “In the second half we managed to get everybody on the court. In these games you have get all the girls some playing time.”
Sacred Heart junior Kaelee Butler led her team in scoring with a dozen points, while junior Taylor Smith scored eight and freshman Kate Gallardo scored seven. Eighth-grader Gracie Falla dropped in five points and junior Korina Bodish had two points.
Lady Crusaders coach Clarence Lomax said the Loyd Star game was his team’s third in a row and his girls just couldn’t stand up to the Lady Hornets’ power.
“Sacred Heart hasn’t been a power in girls basketball since 2008 and 2009, and it showed tonight. We’re always a little behind the 8-ball and Loyd Star was a much better team,” he said.
The Lady Hornets improve to 5-4 with the win while the Lady Crusaders drop to 6-6. Loyd Star plays at Wesson Tuesday night and hosts Enterprise Thursday. Sacred Heart goes to the coast to face St. Patrick Friday night.
