BRANDON (AP) — A district attorney says he is running for an open U.S. House seat in Mississippi.

Michael Guest tells the Clarion Ledger that he is running in the 3rd District congressional race.

His announcement Friday came a day after fellow Republican U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper said won’t seek another two-year term. Harper was first elected in 2008 and is chairman of the Administration Committee.

Guest is the top prosecutor in Rankin and Madison counties, which are two of the largest in the congressional district that makes a diagonal across the central part of the state.

The open race is expected to attract several candidates, with a March 1 filing deadline. Party primaries are June 5, and the general election is Nov. 6.
