On Feb. 24, the Krewe of Ceres will hold its annual charity ball. The women selected as maids will have the honor of representing the organization that evening. Following are bios for each maid.

Carly Barker

Carly Ann Barker is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Barker. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Ann Barker and the late Mr. Barker and Mrs. and Mr. Robert Bowton.      

Barker is a 2016 special honors graduate of Brookhaven High School and a Mississippi Scholar recipient. She participated in National Honor Society, Homecoming Production, Diamond Dolls and was a varsity cheerleader. She was voted a belle her senior year. She was a member of Les Belles Service Club and Junior Auxiliary Crown Club. Barker was involved in Girl Scout Troop 5108 where she received the Bronze and Silver Award.

Barker is a sophomore at the University of Mississippi majoring in accounting. She was a recipient of the Academic Excellence Scholarship. She is a part of the Patterson School of Accounting at the university. Barker is a member of Delta Gamma Sorority where she continues her volunteer work with Delta Gamma’s philanthropies, Service for Sight and Gallant Hearts Guide Dog Center. She furthers her work in the Oxford community by volunteering at the Humane Society, state veterans home, Rebelthon for St. Jude and The Big Event for Lafayette County.

Barker is a member of First Baptist Church where she participated in Rock Solid, Vacation Bible School and Disciple Now.

Sarah Doty

Sarah Caroline Doty is the daughter Dr. Don Doty and Sen. Sally Doty. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Doty, Mrs. Betty Burchfield and the late Mr. Charles Burchfield.

Doty is a 2016 honor graduate of Brookhaven High School and a Mississippi Scholar recipient. She was a National Honor Society officer, student council representative and served as junior and senior class secretary. She was a member of the “Pride of Ole Brook” Marching Band where she served as a percussion section leader. She served on the Mississippi Youth Council, attended the Lott Leadership Summer Program, and was a member of Les Belles and Junior Auxiliary Crown Club. She also received the Silver and Bronze Awards as a member of Girl Scout Troop 5108.

Doty is a sophomore at the University of Mississippi majoring in public policy leadership in the Trent Lott Leadership Institute and minoring in journalism. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, where she serves as technology chair and is a member of the public relations committee. She serves as president of the University of Mississippi Bipartisan Coalition, and assistant executive liaison for the Associated Student Body Senate. She is a member of College Republicans and serves as the public relations chair and political director for the Mississippi Federation of College Republicans.

Doty is a member of First United Methodist Church.

Her sister, Ellen, served as a maid on the 2015 Court.

Emily Mezzanares

Emily Madison Mezzanares is the daughter of Mr. Brian Mezzanares and Ms. Diana Mezzanares. She is the stepdaughter of Mrs. Jennifer Mezzanares. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mezzanares, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Chandler.

Mezzanares is a 2016 special honors graduate of Brookhaven High School and a Mississippi Scholar recipient. She participated in National Honor Society, student council and Homecoming Production. She was a varsity cheerleader and served as captain of her soccer team senior year. She earned her Silver Award in Troop 5108 of the Girl Scouts. She received the highest average medal in AP biology and English. She was chosen to attend the HOBY Leadership Conference in 2014.

Mazzanares is a sophomore attending Mississippi State University majoring in pre-veterinary medicine. She is involved in the pre-veterinary medicine technical program at Mississippi State and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She serves in the Mississippi Air National Guard as an aerospace maintainer. She received a First Sergeant’s Excellence Coin and Commanders Excellence Coin.

Mezzanares is a member of First Baptist Church. Her sister, Ashley Erin Mezzanares, served as a maid in 2014.

Caroline Mills

Caroline Jean Mills is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Jennings Mills. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Jane Mills, the late Mr. Jake Mills, Dr. Forrest Tutor and the late Mrs. Jean Williams.

Mills is a 2016 graduate of Brookhaven Academy and a Mississippi Scholar recipient. She was active on student council, yearbook staff and Lincoln County Teenage Republicans. Mills was class favorite her ninth- through 12th-grade years. She was also voted homecoming maid her freshman year and homecoming queen her senior year. She was voted “Best Christian Character” her senior year and was student of the month on several occasions. She volunteered at Brookhaven Animal Rescue League, Doll’s House and Dickerson Place, and was part of several Veterans Day programs while in high school.

Mills is a sophomore at Mississippi College majoring in psychology. She spent one year at Copiah-Lincoln Community College where she was a member of Baptist Student Union and was part of a homeless ministry.

She is a member of First Baptist Church and is an avid hunter. Past court members from her family include Laurie Mills King and Mary Claire Mills Winford.

Whitney Moak

Whitney Bailey Moak is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edward Sidney Moak. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Samuel Moak, and the late Mr. and Mrs. George Roy Porter.

Moak is a 2016 special honor graduate of Brookhaven Academy and a Mississippi Scholar recipient. She was salutatorian and inducted into the Hall of Fame. She was elected Miss Brookhaven Academy, senior class president and senior homecoming maid. She served on the student council and The National Honor Society. She was Miss Collegiate Brookhaven 2016 and was president of the Junior Auxiliary Crown Club. Moak was selected for the Trent Lott Leadership Institute at the University of Mississippi. Moak was head cheerleader and a UCA All-American. She was a member of BA tennis team, winning a state championship in girls’ doubles. She received the Cougar Leadership Award and the Cougar Spirit Award. She was a 10-year competitive dancer at Showstoppers Studio of Dance.

Moak is a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, where she is a Dean’s Honor Roll student majoring in kinesiology, toward a career in physical therapy. She is a member of the Gamma Beta Phi Society and The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is an active member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, where she serves as special events chair and is involved with ADPi’s philanthropy, Ronald McDonald House Charities. In November, Moak was presented by the Debutante Club of Mississippi.

She is a member of First Baptist Church.            

Moak served as a trainbearer in 2009. Her sister, Sydney Porter Moak, served as a trainbearer 2001 and as a maid in 2009. Her brother, Edward Sidney Moak, served as an escort in 2012. Whitney’s grandfather, Joseph Samuel Moak, served as king in the 1971 Harvest Ball, precursor to the Charity Ball.

Madalyn Ogden

Madalyn Alexis Ogden, Maddie, is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jay Smith of Brookhaven and Mr. and Mrs. William Ogden Jr. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Counts; and Mr. and Mrs. William Ogden Sr.

Ogden is a 2016 honors graduate of Brookhaven High School and a Mississippi Scholar recipient.  She played varsity tennis for four years. She participated in the BHS homecoming production every year and was a maid on the homecoming court her senior year.  She was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club and the National Technical Honor society. She was named class favorite and a BHS beauty by her peers during her high school years.  She was a member of the Junior Auxiliary Crown Club and a Les Belle.  Her most prestigious award was the Danforth “I Dare You” Leadership Award presented to her during her junior year.  This award was determined by vote from the faculty at BHS. 

Ogden is attending the University of Mississippi majoring in elementary education.  She enrolled at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in the spring of her senior year of high school as a full-time student. She received the ACT and Exchange Club scholarship. While at Co-Lin, she was a valuable member of the Co-Lin Wolfpack tennis team.  She was acknowledged as Most Outstanding Student Athlete Tennis 2016-2017 and member of Phi Theta Kappa and received a full scholarship to attend the University of Mississippi.

Odgden was an active member of the youth group at First Baptist Church. She is now attending Pine Lake Church in Oxford.

Hannah Pounds

Hannah Grace Pounds is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Trey Pounds. She is the granddaughter of Dr. Jerry Sharp, and Ms. Frances Vassallo Sharp, Mr. Jerrell Pounds and Mrs. Amarylis Attix.

Pounds is a 2016 honors graduate of Brookhaven High School and a Mississippi Scholar recipient. She participated in student council, National Honor Society and Homecoming Production, and was editor of the BHS yearbook. She was the Panther mascot her senior year and was named Most School Spirit. She worked as a 21st Century tutor at Lipsey Middle School for two years. Pounds was involved in the community through Les Belles De L’Hospitalite and a member of Girl Scout Troop 5108 until graduation where she received her bronze and silver awards. She was a counselor for Brookhaven Little Theater’s Drama Camp for six years.

Pounds is a sophomore at Mississippi State University majoring in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in business and communications. She is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority where she has served as Watermelon Fest Chairman and SET leader, and is currently serving on council as the 2017-2018 recruitment chair. She also works hands-on with the children at Sally Kate Winters Home and Girls Scouts of Greater Mississippi. Pounds was named a 2018 Orientation Leader for MSU and is a member of MSU Operation Christmas Child.

Pounds is a member of First Baptist Church.

Peyton Rogers

Peyton Harrison Rogers is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Rogers. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wane Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Rogers.

Rogers is a 2016 honor graduate of Brookhaven Academy and a Mississippi Scholar recipient. She was a member of the National Honor Society and served as secretary to her graduating class and Lincoln County Teenage Young Republicans. She was a member of Brookhaven Academy’s Millennium Yearbook staff, History Club, Service Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also was a varsity cheerleader and played soccer. Peyton volunteered as a member of Junior Auxiliary Crown Club, Les Belles de Hospitality, and Brookhaven Animal Rescue League. Her most rewarding service was her mission trip to Casa de Fe in Shell, Ecuador.

Rogers received a Mississippi State University Academic Scholarship, the Swalm Scholarship and Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency scholarship.

Rogers is a sophomore at Mississippi State University majoring in medical technology with a minor in biology. She is an active member of Chi Omega Sorority volunteering with the Palmer Home and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Rogers is also a member of Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society and continues her volunteer work on campus with Feed the Hunger and Operation Christmas Child.

She is a member of First Baptist Church.

Her brother Chandler Rogers served as an escort on the court.

Olivia Ross

Olivia Ann Ross is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronny Ross. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Betty Hoffman and the late Ken Hoffman and Mr. and Mrs. Roland Ross.

Ross is a graduate of Brookhaven High School and a Mississippi Scholar recipient. She was a state medalist on the golf team and a National Honors Society member. She received multiple academic awards her senior year, graduating in the top five percent of her class, a year early.

Ross is a student at Copiah-Lincoln Community College and plans to attend Mississippi College in the fall majoring in elementary education with a minor in Christian studies. She has maintained a 4.0 average, placing her on the President’s List, and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa. She is the president of Alpha Omega science club, serves on the President’s Council, and is a member of Phi Beta Lambda. Proudly serving as president of the Baptist Student Union, Ross enjoys organizing activities such as worship nights, Bible studies and nursing home visits. She served for eight weeks in the mission field this past summer and nurtures her passion for music by singing and playing piano on the BSU praise and worship team.

She is a member of Wesson Baptist Church.

Her brother Jacob served as an escort on the 2015 court.

Jamie Sproles

Sarah James “Jamie” Sproles is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lofton Sproles. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Carroll and the late Dub and Barbara Sproles.

Sproles is a 2016 special honors graduate of Brookhaven High School and a Mississippi Scholars recipient. She was a member of National Honors Society and was junior homecoming maid. She was the recipient of the Abshagen Writing Award and the W.L. Roach Memorial Award. She was Homecoming Production student director, junior class president and a student council representative. Sproles was a member of the Girl Scouts and played on the BHS tennis team. Sproles was also 2016 Lincoln County’s Distinguished Young Woman and voted Most Likely to Succeed her senior year.

Sproles is a sophomore at the University of Mississippi majoring in both secondary education and public policy leadership. She is a member of Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program, Honors College and Lott Leadership Institute. She is director of corporate relations for RebelTHON 2018, an Honors College ambassador, representative on Chancellor’s ASB Committee, chair of public relations for Lott Institute, and an ASB Mentor. She is a member of Lambda Sigma Leadership Honors Society and Tri Delta, where she will be head new member educator. She is member of Easthaven Baptist Church and attends Pinelake Church in Oxford.

Sproles and her sister Katie were trainbearers on the court. Her father Tommy Sproles served as an escort. Her aunt Amy Sproles Smith was queen in 1981.

Morgan Wallis

Morgan Grace Wallis is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Teaster and the late Mr. Shane Wallis. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Teaster Sr., Mr. Albert Rials, Mrs. Carmen Rials, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wallace and Mr. Mickey Wallis.

Wallis is a Mississippi Scholar recipient and a 2016 graduate of Enterprise Attendance Center where she graduated with highest honors. She was involved in Senior Beta Club, student council and First Priority. She was a DAR Good Citizen recipient. Wallis was a dancer and student teacher for Showstoppers Studio of Dance. She was a member of Junior Auxiliary Crown Club Les Belles, and was named Miss Merry Christmas of Brookhaven.

Wallis is a sophomore at Copiah-Lincoln Community College where she is majoring in biochemistry. She is a member of the Eta Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society where she serves as the vice president of service. She is a member of the Alpha Omega Science Club and the Trailblazer recruiting team, serving as the vice president of each. She is also a part of the Blue Wave Showband, where she is a co-captain of the Colettes. She has been on the President’s and Vice President’s List while enrolled at Co-Lin.

Wallis is an active member of Topisaw Baptist Church.
