Like any prize worth having, this one did not come easy.

The Lawrence County Lady Cougars were behind after one quarter, and tied after two in the 4A state basketball championship Thursday.

But they won the second half over Byhalia to claim the school’s first state championship in basketball since consolidation in 1987.

“We made history,” Lady Cougars senior Jakya Dampier said. “We overcame our fear to win.”

Yes, they did.

“I wanted it for these girls. They put in the work, they give up their free time, they sacrifice their bodies. To know this is something they’ll have the rest of their lives, that means everything to me,” coach Vicki Rutland said.

Rutland and her team finished the season with a 31-3 record and a state title. That’s about as good as it gets.

We congratulate the Lady Cougars, and all the family members and friends who cheered them along all season. This team has given Lawrence County something to be proud of.
