ELLISVILLE, Miss. (AP) — As many as 100 dogs and cats are being rescued from a property in southern Mississippi.

Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge said deputies are investigating a tip received by Southern Cross Animal Rescue.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Allyson Knotts says two people were present when investigators arrived Wednesday. She says it’s too early to say if criminal charges will be filed.

The Humane Society of the United States says it’s helping remove more than 65 dogs and 30 cats, along with Southern Cross and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

The Humane Society says it’s moving animals to a temporary shelter where they will be examined by a veterinarian. The animal welfare group says the dogs and cats were housed “in conditions typically seen in severe neglect situations.”
