Basketball roundup — Bears sweep Chiefs, Lady Jackets beat Amite Co.

Here is a look at how area hoops teams came out on Tuesday night in high school action.

West Lincoln

West Lincoln won a pair of games on Tuesday night in the Bear Den as they swept the visiting Pelahatchie Chiefs. The girls’ game was never in doubt, as the Lady Bears (13-3) whipped the visitors from Rankin County 66-26. In the boys’ game, the Bears (9-7) did enough in the fourth quarter to hold off a Pelahatchie comeback attempt and claim a 65-62 victory.

Junior Bailey Wilson and senior Katelyn Dickerson combined to lead the Lady Bears’ offensive attack with 16 points apiece. Sophomore Brittany Sturkey chipped in 14 points. Senior Skylar Hall scored six points, as did fellow senior Megan Gerald. Makayla Shelton scored three points, Paige Shedd scored two points, Elizabeth Stogner scored two points and Jena Hughes rounded out the WL scoring with one point.

Junior forward Karlton Byrd was lights-out for the Bears in their win as he scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Senior guard Garrison Coffey added 15 points and junior center Keshon Byrd scored 12 points for the Bears. Michael Brothern and Anthony Hughes scored three points apiece and Enrico Price scored two points for the Bears.

West Lincoln kicks off region play on Friday when they host Amite County.

Enterprise

The Enterprise Lady Yellow Jackets (6-8, 1-0) continued their strong play of late with a 38-26 victory in their Region 7-2A opener against Amite County at home on Tuesday night. Head coach Shane Adams and his team have won three of their last four games, and won Tuesday’s contest with a huge third quarter that saw them outscore the Lady Trojans 12-3 in the period.

“The girls played hard, especially on the defensive end,” said Adams. “We had the fewest turnovers we’ve had all year. Really proud of the effort and glad to get the win.”

Brittany Barnett scored a team-high eight points for the Lady Jackets. Breanna Johnson and Gracie Thompson chipped in seven points apiece. K.K Jones and Alexandra McGee scored four points apiece and Natalie Harris added three points. Shawna Hewitt and Hannah Jergins scored two points apiece and Belle Porter rounded out the Lady Jackets’ scoring with one point.

In the boys’ game, the Trojans used a second-half surge to put the Jackets (4-10, 0-1) away 63-48. A 25-22 Amite County halftime lead was grown in the third quarter when Enterprise was outscored 21-11.

Austin Fugler scored a team-high 18 points to lead Enterprise. Forward Peytin Jergins chipped in 11 points. Taylor Presley and Hib Johnson scored six points apiece for the Jackets. Dylan Carter scored four points and Jalen Grinstead rounded out the Enterprise scoring with three points.

Enterprise gets back into region play on Friday when they travel to Loyd Star.

Brookhaven Academy

The Cougars swept visiting Adams County Christian on Tuesday night in John R. Gray Gymnasium. The Lady Cougars took a 66-51 win over the Lady Rebels while the boys’ game was a rout, with BA winning 83-32.

Senior Jana Case scored 34 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Lady Cougars (12-5) in their win. Sophomore forward Emily Claire Felder added 11 points. Senior Macy Grace Smith scored seven points, and freshman point guard Anne Brantley Warren scored six points while dishing out a whopping 13 assists.

In the boys’ game, the Cougars (14-3) got 17 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward Dawson Flowers. Sean Beard scored a season-high 18 points for BA and Tyler Fortenberry added 13 points and five assists. Senior forward Cade Brown scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds for BA.

BA next travels to Liberty on Thursday to play Amite School Center before playing at Prentiss Christian on Friday.

Wesson

The Cobras (15-4, 0-2) suffered their second straight Region 8-3A defeat by dropping a 45-42 loss to the Seminary Bulldogs. Wesson was led by senior J.D. Allen with 19 points in the loss. Shemar Dickerson chipped in 11 points and junior Kenner Bizot scored six. The Cobras play their first region road game on Friday when they play at Columbia High.

In the girls’ game the Lady Cobras suffered a hard fought 54-50 loss to the Lady Bulldogs.

Lawrence County

The long drive to Poplarville was a little smoother for the Cougars, as they swept a pair of games from the homestanding Hornets on Tuesday night.

In the boys’ game, LC pounded Poplarville for a 52-34 win. Junior La’Darrion Sutton scored a team-high 14 points as the Cougars (6-10, 1-1) picked up their first Region 7-4A win. K.D. Gordon added 11 points for Lawrence County. Jaheim Bell chipped in nine points and Zavion Bridges scored eight points. Eddie Pierre and Juan Rhodes scored five points apiece for the Cougars.

The Lady Cougars (10-6, 2-0) were just as dominant in their 51-31 win over the Lady Hornets. A 14-2 second quarter put LC up 22-16 at halftime as they cruised in the second half.

Lawrence County is back on the road for more region play on Friday when they travel to Brooklyn for matchup with Forrest County AHS.
