A Crystal Springs man found guilty of assault Thursday in Lincoln County Circuit Court could go back to prison to serve the remainder of a 2010 manslaughter sentence in the death of a Bogue Chitto man.

After a two-day trial, a Lincoln County jury deliberated for one hour before they found 30-year-old Andrew Hammond guilty of shooting a “friend of a friend” with a New England .410 shotgun Dec. 2, 2017. After hearing the evidence, a jury decided he was guilty of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and two counts of simple assault.

Judge Michael Taylor will announce sentencing for Hammond Monday at 3:30 p.m. in the courtroom of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Government Complex.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said deputies arrested Hammond Dec. 5, 2017, on charges of aggravated assault, possession of drugs and sale and transfer of firearms.

He said deputies had been searching for Hammond since Dec. 2, 2017, when he was accused of shooting an acquaintance in the lower leg. Rushing said the shooting occurred on Wellman Drive between Bogue Chitto and East Lincoln following a dispute by the two men over some property.

A jury found Hammond guilty of manslaughter at the conclusion of a two-day murder trial in 2010 in the shooting death of 45-year-old William “Bubba” Thompson of Bogue Chitto at the residence of Thompson’s daughter, Gena Thompson.

Hammond was sentenced under Judge David Strong in January 2011 to 20 years for the fatal shooting with 10 suspended and 10 to serve, with five years post release supervision.

In 2013, the state Court of Appeals upheld the manslaughter conviction.
