The congregation at one Brookhaven church is sharing God’s favor with others by stuffing blessings into clear plastic bags.

CenterPoint Church, located next to the Lincoln County Baptist Association building on Halbert Heights, has started an initiative called Project Serve, which allows members of the congregation to provide community outreach. Whether it’s leading a worship service at a nursing home in town or bringing donuts to law enforcement officers, the church does what it can for others, said Jessica Breazeale, whose husband, Ricky, is the lead pastor.

“We just do all kinds of stuff,” she said.

On Sunday, they’ll be filling blessing bags after the morning worship service.

Not limited to just church members, the bag-packing event is open to anyone who wants to join.

Those participating are asked to bring personal care items like soap, toothpaste and socks to place in the bags, Breazeale said.

Lunch will be provided.

Breazeale will be satisfied with 100 bags filled, but she’s hoping they’ll be able to do more. The filled bags will be divided between those volunteering to pack them for distribution when needed.

The bags are designed to be kept in the trunk of the volunteers’ cars so that if someone looks like they could use the supplies, they can be given a bag.

“You can bless them right then and there,” Breazeale said.

The purpose of this initiative is to teach people how to serve others and show them what serving really means.

“You do have a big part in the great commission,” Breazeale said. “We can make a difference.”

Project Serve was started about six months ago when Ricky Breazeale had the idea after serving at a church plant in north Alabama.

“It was so successful there, why wouldn’t we try it here?” he said.

One of Jessica Breazeale’s favorite things about Project Serve is coming together with other believers and doing something good for the community.

“I love everything about serving,” she said.

Serving others allows her to give back for all of the times she’s been served herself.

“I’d be crazy not to return the favor,” she said.
