Tobie Lambert, an English and literature teacher with the Mississippi School of the Arts, was chosen recently for a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction award by the National Society of High School Scholars. Lambert was honored at MSA’s Thanksgiving luncheon Thursday. “I really felt humbled by the whole experience,” Lambert said.

Students in NSHSS nominate each year the teacher who has made the biggest contribution to their academic career. It recognizes educators who can inspire students to develop as scholars, leaders and citizens.

Lambert was nominated by Skylar Noblin-Laminack.

“She’s very inspirational to the students and staff she’s around every day,” Noblin-Laminack said. “She’s always there to welcome us with open arms. She just loves everybody everywhere she goes.”

Below is a look back at a few more good news headlines.

• The local chapter of Mission Mississippi will have a Thanksgiving service at First United Methodist Church at 6 p.m Sunday. The group is also organizing a community choir for the service. Rehearsal for anyone who wants to sing in the choir will begin at 4:30, prior to the service.

• Brookhaven High senior Lynsey Nations recently signed a letter-of-intent with the Meridian Community College softball program.

As a junior Nations hit .262 at the plate for coach Mandy Vinson and the Lady Panthers. Nations drove in a team high 35 RBIs and scored 15 runs. She hit 10 doubles, five home runs and one triple. Nations was pressed into service as a pitcher last season and struck out 51 in 117 innings as a first year starter.

• For the second time in three years, Betty’s Eat Shop is the winner of the Taste of the Trust’s People’s Choice award.The annual Taste of the Trust is a fundraiser hosted by the Brookhaven Trust and proceeds go to preserving the history of Brookhaven, promoting the arts and improving downtown. More than a dozen competitors set up shop at the Brookhaven Country Club with samples of their favorite dishes for tasting, while guests enjoyed the offerings in a party atmosphere. Marvin Curtis and Topher Brown provided entertainment for the night.
