Brookhaven had sales tax receipts of more than $523,000 in September, bringing the Fiscal Year 2020-2021 year-to-date total to $1.634 million.

Though September’s $523,406.01 was less than each of the previous two months ($565,664.61 and $545,017.23), it was still $24,000 higher than that of September 2019. The three-month period brought in $160,210.40 more than the corresponding months of 2019.

Statewide, city receipts totaled more than $40.183 million, up $1.8 million over September one year ago. The state’s year-to-date total is $121,955,878.97. Data includes all 362 cities and towns in the state, plus public universities and community colleges.

Grenada and Canton are the two cities in the state closest in residential population to that of the Home Seekers Paradise — slightly more and slightly less, respectively. Grenada brought in $394,509.32 for September, $34,000 less than one year earlier, putting its year-to-date total at $1.194 million. Canton had $285,468.52 in tax receipts for the month, $22,500 more than one year prior, bringing its YTD to $878,106.30.

Across Mississippi, 34 cities have larger populations than Brookhaven. Of these, 13 had lower tax receipts than Brookhaven for August — Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, Natchez, Moss Point, McComb, Long Beach, Hernando, Grenada, Greenwood, Gautier, Clinton, Clarksdale and Bay St. Louis.

Jackson has the largest population of any Mississippi municipality.  The state capital brought in $2,396,701.94 in September sales tax receipts, up $70,000 from the previous month but down nearly $10,000 from the corresponding month of 2019. Jackson’s YTD of $7.18 million is ahead of 2019’s $6.92 million.

Eight other cities brought in sales tax receipts of more than $1 million for September — Flowood, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Meridian, Olive Branch, Ridgeland, Southaven and Tupelo.

Satartia, the state’s smallest municipality included on the Mississippi Department of Revenue’s sales tax list with a population of 49, brought in $104.93, up $4.72 from September 2019, with a YTD of $289.24, up $0.64 from 2019’s YTD.

Three towns had sales receipts of less than $100 each — Snow Lake Shores in Benton County, population 289, brought in $91.55; Falcon in Quitman County, population 140, brought in $84.90; and Gattman in Monroe County, population 93, had receipts of $90.24.

Paulding in Jasper County had receipts of $33.58 (YTD $53.73). Although Paulding has a large enough population to make it Mississippi’s 221st-largest town, it is unincorporated. The incorporated town of Tillatoba in Yalobusha County, however, has a population of 25 and is not included in the Mississippi Department of Revenue’s sales tax receipt cycle.

Sales tax data is provided by MDR. Sales tax has a three-month cycle. In Month 1, tax is collected by the retailer. In Month 2, tax is reported and paid to the Department of Revenue by the retailer. In Month 3, sales tax income (“diversion”) is paid by the DMDOR to cities. This report is based on the month the tax is collected at the MDOR (Month 2).
