Lincoln County, surrounding area under tornado watch

BROOKHAVEN — NWS Jackson issued a tornado watch for Lincoln County at 3:55 p.m. and as thunder rolls over head, the storm is slowly making its way across the county. As of 6:15, there is an 80 percent chance of rain for the area and the tornado watch is set to expire at 11 p.m. Franklin, Lawerence, Copiah and Pike Counties are included in the tornado watch.

Showers and thunderstorms remain likely before 10 p.m. Monday morning has a 10 percent chance of rain. Any thunderstorms tonight are capable of producing tornadoes, damaging wind up to 70 mph and large hail up to a tennis ball in size.

Keep an eye on these storms as things can turn sideways quickly. According to NWS tornado survey information six tornadoes touched down in Friday night’s severe storms and tornado outbreak. Preliminary survey results indicate the strongest tornado of the bunch was an EF4 which hit Issaquena, Sharkey and Humphreys Counties Friday night. It traveled 59.4 miles and had a maximum width of 3/4 of a mile with wind speeds topping out at 170 mph killing 20 people.

Three people were killed in a EF3 tornado which touched down in Carrol and Montgomery counties Friday night. Mississippi has seen 21 tornadoes in 2023. Little Bahalia in Northeast Lincoln County was hit by a EF1 tornado back in February.

Entergy reports 22,586 customers are without power across Mississippi as of 6p.m. but none of those customers are located in Lincoln, Copiah, Franklin or Lawerence Counties. Southwest Electric reports 21 people are without power in Copiah County.
