Funeral services for Herman Howard Smith Jr. of Brookhaven are 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 6, at Riverwood Family Funeral Service with burial in Riverwood Memorial Park.

Visitation is Sunday from 5 until 9 p.m. at Riverwood.

Mr. Smith, 72, died Jan. 2, 2014. He was born on March 7, 1941, to Herman Howard Smith Sr. and Novice Wiggins Smith.

He was a veteran serving in the United States Navy and Army Special Forces. He was a member of Southway Baptist Church.

He was an outdoorsman and an avid fisherman with numerous close friends and fishing buddies.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sandra Ainsworth Smith; brother-in-law, Elmo Rushing; and a special friend, Peggy Mansell.

He is survived by his sons, Herman “Shane” Smith and wife, Karen, Christopher “Shawn” Smith and wife, Heidi, Brandon Michael Smith and wife, Adrienne; brother, Sidney Allan Smith; sister, Carolyn Smith Rushing; four grandchildren, Sandra Nicole “Sandy Smith Stewart, Carson Shawn Smith, Oliver Quinn Smith and Emery Michael Smith; uncle, Truly A. Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews.
