Franklin County boys win; Loyd Star girls prevail 62-61

MEADVILLE – Logan Jones scored 18 points and led four FranklinCounty players in double figures as the Bulldogs beat Loyd Star75-61 Saturday night.

In the varsity girls game, Loyd Star pulled out a 62-61 victorydespite a 33-point outburst by Franklin County guard CarlettaBrown. The Lady Hornets were led by center Christie May with 14points.

The Lady Hornets improved their record to 12-3.Franklin County, coached by Albert Cain, slipped to 5-10.

Dana Coke made two free throws with 15 seconds left to provideLoyd Star with the margin of victory. Brown hit a late trey fromdowntown which reduced the deficit to 1 point.

Coach Lori Britt said she was happy to escape with a victoryover Franklin County. “We didn’t play our best game. We’re justglad to get out of here victorious.”

May collected 12 rebounds and 2 blocked shots for Loyd Star.Monica Townsend grabbed 9 rebounds. Coke finished with 13 pointsand Beck Smith had 12.

Brown’s point total included 5 treys. She also had 6 steals, 5assists and 4 rebounds.

Shantae Gills added 12 points. Dedrie Gant grabbed 8 rebounds.Susan Gant had 7 rebounds.

The Bulldogs (10-8) won their third straight game lastnight. They were led in rebounding by forward Logan Jones with 14boards, plus 3 steals. Darral Brown, a 6-4 senior, had 14 rebounds,5 blocked shots and 2 steals. Power forward Grant Rogers had 13rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocked shots.

Playmaker Kedric Covington provided 13 points and 10assists.

Loyd Star (7-8) got 8 rebounds and 4 blocked shots fromTyrone Tyler before he fouled out midway through the fourthquarter. Freddy Calcote and Brad Britt each had 7 rebounds.Demarcus Barnes made 2 steals.

“We played well for three quarters,” said FranklinCounty coach Chris Jordan. “The fourth quarter was what I expectedto be,” as the Hornets exploded for 28 points.

“We must play four quarters of basketball to besuccessful,” Jordan pointed out. The Bulldogs host North PikeTuesday and visit Jefferson County Friday night for Division 6-3Aaction.
