Dickey represents BHS in soccer game

Midfielder Courtney Dickey will represent Brookhaven in theSixth Annual Coca-Cola All-Star Girls Soccer Game which isscheduled for Saturday at Ray Renfroe Stadium on the HindsCommunity College campus in Raymond. She reported today forpractice . The game kicks off at 6 p.m., followed by the all-starboys game at 8.

Dickey scored 13 goals as a senior, helping lead Brookhaven’sLady Panthers to the Class 4A state playoffs. She played for CoachSally Perkins at BHS.

Dickey has soccer in her future, too. She has signed a soccerscholarship with Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

She said she is looking forward to the all-star contest. “I’mtrying to stay in shape,” said Dickey. “I’ve been kicking the ballaround. I can’t wait. I’m so excited. I’ve always wanted to be init.”

She has been playing organized soccer since the sixth grade. Sheplayed for Brookhaven Youth Soccer Organization and steadilyimproved her skills.

“You learn how to do teamwork,” said Dickey. ” You learn to workwell with other people. It keeps you in shape.”

Dickey is used to the heat and humidity of a typical Mississippisummer. She has been working for J&P Farms, a chicken farmlocated in eastern Lincoln County and owned by Will Jordan. Itfeatures six large houses, with 25,000 chickens in each house.

Dickey said chickens require 24-hour a day care. “It reallykeeps you in shape.”

At Co-Lin, Dickey said she wants to major in agriculture. She’sactive in the 4-H Club which requires her to maintain a tightscheduled,caring for the animals before she departs for school. “Iraise Brangus and commercial heifers.”

Coaching the South girls are Karl Freidrich of Harrison Centraland Fred Schiever of Brandon. The North girls are coached by KevinManton of Vicksburg and Mike Curley of Madison Central.

The North holds a 4-0-1 lead in the girls series. Last year theSouth battled to a 1-1 deadlock, snapping the North’ unbeatenstring.

The South leads the boys series by a 7-4-8 margin. The Southdefeated the North 4-1 last year.
