The host Brookhaven Academy Cougars won their Holiday ClassicTournament Saturday night with a hard-fought 53-46 win over theMcComb Parklane Pioneers. This was the Cougars’ third win over thePioneers in two weeks.

Senior center Paul Coker powered the Cougars with a game-high 34points and 12 rebounds. Guard Lance Newlon sparked the Pioneerswith 29 points, including three 3-pointers.

In the consolation games today, the Simpson County boys knockedoff Central Hinds 55-52 and the Centreville girls dumped PrentissChristian School.

“Paul is a great player,” said Brookhaven Academy boys coachDale Watts after the win. “He has matured. He really did well.Chase Magee did real good. Alex Davis got the ball to Paul.”

The Cougars (12-1) came into the final frame up by 10 points,46-36, over the Pioneers (11-7). Parklane cut the deficit to sixpoints twice and finally four points, 50-46, with 1:40 left toplay. Brookhaven’s Craig Smith nailed two free throws with 1:15left and Davis went 1-for-2 for a 53-46 lead with 41 secondsremaining to secure the win.

The Cougars led 16-9 after the first quarter and went up by 10points, 32-22, over the Pioneers at the half.

Coker and Davis made three steals apiece for the Cougars.

“It’s hard to play three games in-a-row,” said Watts of thetournament format. “Tonight, the difference was we stepped it up. Iam pleased with that.”

Simpson 55, Central Hinds 52

In boys consolation action, Neal Stevens paced Simpsonwith 20 points. Chester Britt netted 13 points.

Central Hinds got 20 points from Steve Thomas. Finishingwith 15 points was Richard Kelly.

On Jan. 5, 2002, Brookhaven Academy travels to WilkinsonCounty Christian Academy in Woodville to play Class AAA powerCentral Private of Baker, La.
