Lady ‘Cats win; Loyd Star splits at Bogue Chitto

BOGUE CHITTO — Tyler Williford pumped in a game-high 22 pointsto lead the Loyd Star Hornets in a 79-51 win over the Bogue ChittoBobcats Tuesday night in Calhoun Gymnasium.

In the varsity girls matchup, Kimberlee Thomas’ 20 pointsdirected the Lady Bobcats to a 60-48 victory over the Lady Hornets.Thomas also pulled down 17 rebounds and made two steals.

“We shot the ball extremely well,” said Loyd Star boys coachGene (Moochie) Britt. “We are improving every game. Defensively, wepounded the boards. We are playing better as a team.”

Loyd Star (6-1) jumped on Bogue Chitto 22-10 in the firstquarter and pushed its lead to 38-19 at the half.

“We didn’t handle the pressure as well as we could,” statedBogue Chitto first-year boys coach Todd Wilson. “They (Hornets)outrebounded us. They post the ball real well. This is our thirdgame. We have to improve.”

Adding support to the Loyd Star win with 12 points and eightrebound was Ron Jones. Drew Case netted 10 points and made threesteals. Russell Brewer pulled down seven points and had threeassists.

Bogue Chitto (0-3) got 18 points from Antwain Lyons followed bynine from Keyouna Perkins.

Bogue Chitto 60, Loyd Star 48

In the girls varsity game, Tanesha Johnson’s 16 points, 10rebounds and three steals helped the 2-1 Lady Bobcats. Meleah Brownfired in 14 points, grabbed five rebounds, made two steals and fiveassists. Finishing with 10 rebounds was Candace Braxton.

“My girls came out and played tonight,” said Bogue Chitto girlscoach Christi Terrell. “We hustled. We still have a lot of work andthings to accomplish. I’m proud of the girls.”

Bogue Chitto led Loyd Star 18-11 in the first quarter but theLady Hornets cut the deficit to a 27-24 at halftime. A 13-4 run bythe Lady Bobcats put them up 40-28 going into the final frame.

Powering the 5-2 Lady Hornets with a game-high 23 points wasJordan Britt. Britt also grabbed six rebounds, made two steals andhad six assists. Shara Johnson followed with 13 points, fiverebounds and two steals.

“Bogue Chitto deserved to win because they played hard,” saidLoyd Star girls coach Lori Britt. “We’ve got to do a better job onthe boards.”

Junior high games

The Bogue Chitto boys clipped Loyd Star 27-20, powered by SethAvants with 14 points.

McKinley Hamilton led Loyd Star with eight points.

The Loyd Star girls handed Bogue Chitto a 33-27defeat. Shannon Chester led the Lady Hornets with 13 points. HaleySones finished with 10 points.

Bogue Chitto got 11 points from Adriene Hall.
