Loyd Star teams win Lin. Co. tourney openers

The host Loyd Star Hornets swept two games from the EnterpriseYellow Jackets Thursday night in the first round of the LincolnCounty Round-Robin Tournament.

The Loyd Star boys pounded Enterprise 101-56 and the LadyHornets dumped the Lady Jackets 63-49.

Today’s games feature West Lincoln against Enterprise in girlsaction at 4 p.m. followed by boys play at 5:30. In the 7 and 8:30games, host Loyd Star faces Bogue Chitto.

Loyd Star 101, Enterprise 56

The Hornets (10-1) launched 10 three-pointersin the game. Loyd Star opened the first quarter with a 30-8 leadand outscored Enterprise 28-20 in the second frame to carry a 58-28lead in at the half.

“We shot the ball real well outside,” said Loyd Star boys coachGene “Moochie” Britt after the win. “It was good to have otherpeople scoring. Our defense was very good. We played well as ateam. I’m proud of the way we are playing right now.”

The Hornets came out with a big 31-5 run on the Jackets in thethird quarter to take an 89-33 leading going into the fourthquarter.

“Loyd Star played extremely well,” said Enterprise boys coachRickey Gray. “We could not get nothing going. Loyd Star made theplays and we did not.”

Leading Loyd Star with 23 points, four rebounds and seven stealswas Tyler Williford. Dwayne Branning and Matthew Henderson netted11 points apiece. Ron Jones pulled down eight rebounds. Drew Caseand Brad Fells collected seven rebounds apiece. Fells also had foursteals followed by Case with three steals. Leading with 2three-pointers each were Williford, Case and Henderson.

Corey Everett paced winless Enterprise with 14 points. AndrewWilliams finished with 12 points.

Loyd Star 63, Enterprise 49

Loyd Star’s Jordan Britt directed the 7-4 Lady Hornets with agame-high 28 points, four rebounds, four steals and fourassists.

“It was a team effort and we have a more balanced scoring,” saidLoyd Star girls coach Lori Britt.

The Lady Jackets (3-3) controlled the first quarter and led19-13. The Lady Hornets answered back in the second quarter for a20-12 run to go up 33-31 at halftime.

Loyd Star continued to outscore Enterprise with an 11-6 run inthe third quarter for a 44-37 advance going into the finalframe.

“Our effort was better,” said Enterprise girls coach JillNations. “We just missed some easy shots and free throws.”

Contributing to the Loyd Star win with seven points each wereKatie Nettles and Brittany Brown. Brown also grabbed six reboundsand made two steals. Dakota Brooks pulled down five rebounds andmade three steals. Also with five rebounds was Hailey Ratcliff.

The top scorer for Enterprise was Alisha Mason with 14 points.Kaylin Burke finished with nine points.
