Relative suspected in deadly shooting

A Lincoln County man died Monday in Jackson after being shotduring an altercation early Saturday in the Brignall community,authorities said.

Byron Terrell Robinson, 24, of 2804 Brignall Road, waspronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. Monday by hospital staff at theUniversity of Mississippi Medical Center, said Clay McMorris,Lincoln County coroner-medical examiner.

Robinson was transferred to the Jackson facility from King’sDaughters Medical Center after being shot in the chest area about2:30 a.m. Saturday near the old Brignall Store.

“He was shot several times,” Sheriff Wiley Calcote saidtoday.

Calcote identified the alleged shooter as Bruce Smith Jr., ageunavailable, of Cripple Lane.

“We have a suspect, and an arrest is pending Crime Lab resultson (the shooting),” Calcote said.

Calcote said Smith was in critical condition at UMC after beinginjured in a car accident while fleeing the scene. He wastransferred to UMC by air ambulance from KDMC.

Smith lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree on New HopeTrail in the New Sight community, Calcote said. The sheriff saidSmith’s accident was not the result of being pursued.

Calcote cited ongoing domestic problems between Smith andRobinson. The two men are brothers-in-law.

“We’ve been out on several domestic complaints about problemsbetween the two,” Calcote said.

McMorris said Mississippi Mortuary Services will perform anautopsy will be performed on Robinson. Funeral services, under thedirection of Williams Mortuary, are incomplete.
