Smith hurls victory; Co-Lin splits twinbill

WESSON — Scotty Smith gave up a first-pitch homer to BrettBurand, settled down and pitched Co-Lin to a 5-2 Saturday victoryon Sullivan Field. Smith (3-1), a crafty freshman from Brookhaven,gave up 3 hits in 6 innings, walked 1 and fanned 4.

LSU-Eunice had won the opener 10-6.

“I’m glad we were able to pull out a split after losing thefirst game,” said Co-Lin coach Keith Case. “I think LSU got sevenunearned runs against us in the first game.

“In the second game, Scotty Smith really came back andbulldogged through a tough game,” Case pointed. “Patrick Williamshad a good day at the plate and we played good defense in thesecond game.

“We beat a very good team in LSU-Eunice.”

Case said first baseman Jody Britt would probably miss a week ofaction due to a knee injury. He has a loose patella tendon and isunder going therapy.

Co-Lin 5, LSU-Eunice 2

In 7th inning relief, Ryan Belanger gave up 2 hits and 1 earnedrun. He fanned 1 batter.

Brett Durand was the losing pitcher. In 5.2 innings, he gave up8 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks and struck out 5.

Catcher Matthew Schexnayder had 2 hits and 3 RBIs in thevictory. He provided run-scoring hits in the third and fifthinnings.

Collecting singles for Co-Lin were Qualls, Sykes and CodyCunningham. Qualls scored 3 runs.

LSU-Eunice fell to 15-5 with the loss.

Co-Lin (8-8) resumes play Monday, hosting Hibbing, Minn., for adoubleheader. Action begins at 1 p.m.

LSU-Eunice 10, Co-Lin 6

Right-fielder Derrick McBride hit a 2-run, 5th-inning homer andthe Bengals defeated Co-Lin in the opener.

Co-Lin shortstop Patrick Williams hit a 2-run homer in theseventh with Xavier Qualls aboard. Williams and Qualls both had 2hits in the loss. Justin Sykes doubled.

Jacob Guzetta struck out 3 batters in 5 innings and got the win.He gave up 5 hits and 4 runs.

Freshman Te Riley was the losing pitcher. He was replaced byWill Buckels in the second inning.

At the plate, McBride went 3-for-3. Designated hitter JoshPomier had 2 hits.
