Besieged board reinstates educator

More than 100 people lined the halls of the Brookhaven SchoolDistrict office Tuesday to encourage the board of trustees to renewAlexander Junior High School coach Jeff King’s contract for theupcoming school year.

After a more than two-hour executive session, Superintendent LeaBarrett reported that the board voted unanimously to renew King’scontract.

According to supporters, who would not be identified, King’scontract was not renewed because district officials were unhappywith disciplinary choices he made.

King was informed of the decision during a July 19 hearing andhad 30 days to appeal, said supporters.

Barrett said she could not comment on the issue because it was apersonnel matter.

“All I can say is that the board voted to renew his contract forthis coming year,” she said.

King, his wife and his attorney showed up for the meeting at 7p.m. King greeted and thanked supporters before he and his attorneywent into the executive session, which was closed to thepublic.

His supporters flashed bright yellow signs reading “We love youCoach King” and “No one can replace you Coach King.”

Supporters held a prayer session for King and lingered duringthe lengthy executive session.
