Lady Hornets rally past Wesson

WESSON — Coach Jan Delaughter’s Loyd Star Lady Hornets clinchedthe Division 7-2A championship Monday night, beating the WessonLady Cobras 13-5. Loyd Star is 11-6 overall and 3-0 in thedivision.

“We started slow but our girls started hitting the ball well”said Coach Delaughter. “I’m proud we won our division and we madethe state playoffs.”

The state playoffs begin April 15.

Winning pitcher Ariel Hunsucker struck out 4 batters and walked1, allowing 11 hits. The Lady Hornets overcame 7 errors and a 4-0,first-inning deficit.

Losing pitcher Stacy Lowery fanned 4 batters and walked 3.

At the plate, Loyd Star was led by second baseman Carrie Moakwho hit an inside-the-park homer. Third baseman Brittany Beeson andfirst baseman Annie Smith doubled and singled. Catcher Haley Sones,designated player Abby Delaughter and Hunsucker doubled. Collectingsingles were Amber Restivo and Calleye Douglas.

A double and a single by Nikki McCardle powered Wesson. BethanyDykes, Sam Ellison, Monica Garcia had 2 hits apiece for Wesson.Lowery and Christina Fink singled.

Junior Varsity Action

Loyd Star pounded Wesson 16-1 in the JV game. Brooke Delaughterwent 2 innings and struck out 3 batters in notching the win.Brittany Wallace fanned 1 and walked 1 in 2 innings of relief.

Two homers by Emily Smith powered Loyd Star. Shelby Palmertripled and singled. Lindsey Duckworth collected 3 singles. KarahSmith, Leah Britt, Sarah Falvey and Miranda Watts singled.

Loyd Star hosts Seminary at 5 and 6 pm. for a division testThursday. Wesson, coached by Ricky Gunter, is at Seminary April10.
