Lady Panthers roar; boys fall to Florence

Brookhaven split a pair of Division 6-4A encounters withFlorence Tuesday night in Sinclair Gymnasium. The Lady Panthersposted a 70-53 win over the Lady Eagles, while the Panthers droppeda 60-47 decision to the Eagles.

Brookhaven breaks for the Christmas holidays; returning toaction Dec. 27-29 in the McComb Coca-Cola Classic.

The Lady Panthers (12-4, 3-0) realized that all 10 players whodressed had entered the scoring column. Sophomore forward AshleyGayten led all scorers with 14 points. Dandy Dozen juniors SwayzeBlack and Nikki Byrd followed with 11 and 10 points respectivelyfor head coach Freda Craft.

The Lady Eagles (2-9, 0-3), coached by Shane Wingate, were ledby Hope Moore with 12 points.

Florence outdistanced Brookhaven 26-19 in the final stanza,hitting 14-of-17 free throws (82 percent).

The Panthers (8-7, 1-2) collected numerous turnovers fromFlorence throughout the night. The downfall would be theirinability to convert those steals into points as they sufferedtheir first division setback. In the second half, Ole Brookcommitted 21 of its 31 team fouls; in an effort to try and catchup.

The Eagles (7-7, 1-2) were relentless on the offensive boards,scoring 28 points on a collection of offensive putbacks. Florence,coached by former USM standout Darrin Chancellor, got a game-high21 points from Antonio Cousin. Tana Jones followed with 14.

Charles (Bobo) Rancifer led Brookhaven with 16 points. SimmieYarborough tallied 15 points for head coach Ronald Hines.
