Lady Wolves win over Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON — Sophomore guard Hanna Porter scored a game-high 22points, nailing 6 treys, to power the Co-Lin Lady Wolves to a big83-64 South Division win over the Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs Thursdaynight.

In the men’s game, Gulf Coast knocked off Co-Lin for the secondtime this season, beating the Wolves 76-61.

Co-Lin returns home to Mullen Gymnasium next week to host Hindson Monday and Jones County on Thursday. The women’s games begin at6 p.m. followed by the men.

Co-Lin 83, Gulf Coast 64

The Lady Wolves (21-2, 11-1) started off slow in the first halfbut went on a 20-5 run in the final six minutes to go ahead of theLady Bulldogs 42-24 at the half. Porter netted 15 points, including5 treys in the first half. Nikki Williams followed 7 points.Williams finished the game with 15 points, 13 assists and 5steals.

“In the second half, we were able to play a lot of people tomaintain our lead,” said Young. “Everyone scored in the game.”

Sophomore post Erica Trahan led off the backboards with 9rebounds, followed by Dominique Whitfield and Kristin Ellis with 6apiece. Whitney Scott made 5 steals.

“We need to win Monday to host the State Tournament,” addedYoung. “We host Hinds Monday.”

Carrie Dawson led Gulf Coast (8-15) with 17 points. Ja’netSchonberg followed with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Gulf Coast 76, Co-Lin 61

“We played pretty good for the first 18 minutes of the firsthalf and had a tie game,” said Coach Young. “But then we took somereal questionable shots and didn’t guard on defense.”

Young was subbing for men’s coach Dennis Sims who had beenhospitalized with a viral infection. Young said Sims might beavailable to coach the men Monday against Hinds.

The Bulldogs improved their record to 17-5 overall and 10-1 inthe South. It was the third South loss in the last 4 games forCo-Lin.

The leading scorer for Co-Lin (15-7, 8-4) was Christian Marshallwith 14 points followed by Greg Truvillion with 11 points and CoreyLondon with 10. Marshall led off the backboards with 7 rebounds.Charles Lewis pulled down 5 rebounds and had 4 assists.

Carlos Wright directed Gulf Coast with 20 points. Henry Salterfinished with 18 points followed by Luther Suggs with 15.
