Board talks personnel during closed meeting

The Brookhaven Board of Aldermen met for more than two hours inexecutive session Thursday night, emerging only to briefly discussthe library budget.

The board had recessed their meeting Tuesday night to continuediscussion at a later date and returned Thursday. They went intoexecutive session after calling the meeting to order to discusscontract negotiations and specific job performances.

In open session, Ward Five Alderman D.W. Maxwell went over theaudited statement for the Lincoln County Public Library, expressingconcerns that $537,000 of the $783,000 budget goes to salaries andbenefits. Maxwell said he’d spoken with people who would like tosee more of the budget go to supplies and materials.

Ward Four Alderwoman Shirley Estes pointed out that much of thelibrary’s material is cumulative and does not need to be boughtagain every year. Maxwell agreed and stated that he felt that the69 percent of the budget spent on personnel might be excessive andthat he felt it was worth the board’s consideration.

Then, at Maxwell’s request, the board returned to executivesession to discuss litigation. Maxwell indicated he wanted todiscuss the redistricting of the wards after annexation.
