Hornets keep rolling; Lady Cobras bag win

The unbeaten Loyd Star Hornet red machine continues to rollTuesday night. Powered by Glenn Thomas’ 23 points and 8 rebounds,the Loyd Star boys buzzed to a 95-62 Division 6-2A win over theWesson Cobras before a large, vocal crowd.

The Loyd Star boys improved to 18-0 on the season and remainundefeated in the division with a 7-0 record. Wesson fell to 2-4 inthe division and 12-7 on the season.

In the varsity girls game, a strong first-quarter performancehelped the Lady Cobras to a 42-34 victory over the LadyHornets.

Wesson hosts West Lincoln for non-division action Friday night,starting with junior varsity girls action at 4 p.m., followed bythe JV boys at 5, the varsity girls at 6 and the varsity boys at7:30.

Loyd Star hosts division foe Madison St. Joe Friday, beginningwith the JV at 5.

Loyd Star 95, Wesson 62

Loyd Star came out and played four solid quarters of basketball.The Hornets led the Cobras 20-8 in the first quarter, 43-25 at thehalf and 71-40 going into the final frame.

“Our hustle was great tonight,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene(Moochie) Britt after the win. “We played better tonight than atany other time of the year. I was well pleased with everybody.”

Loyd Star had just 7 turnovers on the night.

Contributing to the Hornets’ win with 18 points was JosephShelby. DeAndre Butler fired in 17 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, made3 steals and had 4 assists. Following with 16 points, 6 reboundsand 5 assists was Ashton Fox.

“I was proud of our effort,” said Wesson boys coach Ron Kessler.”We have to be a better defensive team in our half court.”

Directing Wesson with a game-high 24 points, including 7 treys,was Josh Hood. Tyler Lumley finished with a double-double of 17points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Cross had 5 assists.

Wesson 42, Loyd Star 34

The Lady Cobras (15-4, 6-0) played a strong first quarter for a13-5 lead over the Lady Hornets (15-5, 4-3). At the half, Wessonled Loyd Star 22-14.

In the second half, Loyd Star cut the deficit to 2 points, 30-28with 5:20 left and 32-30 with 4:26 remaining but could not catchWesson.

“We played with really good ball control,” said Wesson girlscoach Hugh Webb who credited his guards, Macie Case, AnsleySchimmel and Ann Shelby Davis. “I can’t say enough aboutSchimmel.

“And Shauntay Walker had her best game,” added Webb.

Walker is a 5-9 sophomore post player.

Schimmel was the leading scorer with 16 points, including 4treys. Walker followed with 12 points and pulled down 8 rebounds.Davis followed with 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

“We got into a hole in the first quarter,” said Loyd Star girlscoach Billy Vaughn. “We had a shot in the fourth quarter to get outof it and didn’t do it. We didn’t come ready to play in the firstquarter.”

Leading the Lady Hornets with 13 points and 8 rebounds wasShannon Chester. Haley Sones finished a double-double, 11 points,12 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Sarah Falvey pulled down 6rebounds.

Junior varsity action

The Loyd Star girls nipped Wesson 23-21, powered by CourtneyWatts with 11 points. Tyrisha Patterson netted 5.

Leading the Lady Cobras with 6 points was Hannah Selman.Lychrissa Harris scored 5.

The Cobras held off the Hornets for a 49-45 JV victory.

Powering Wesson with 14 points was Zach Fetcko. Gib Britt had 10points, followed by D.J. Coleman with 8.

Zach Smith’s 11 points paced Loyd Star. Preston Hebert finishedwith 9 points, followed by Damion Otis with 8.
