Co-Lin splits with SW

SUMMIT – The Co-Lin Wolves came away a split Saturday in abaseball doubleheader with the Southwest Bears in the 4th AnnualCoca-Cola Powerade Challenge. Co-Lin (18-23, 10-12) managed to keepthe trophy for the third year in-a-row.

Southwest clipped Co-Lin 3-2 in eight innings in the opener andthe Wolves came back to take the second contest 6-1, gaining a 2-2deadlock in the South Division series.

The Bears (20-26) are under the direction of first-year headcoach Lee Kuyrkendall.

“We got the trophy for a third year straight,” said Co-Lin headbaseball coach Keith Case. “We’re still in the hunt for theplayoffs. We control our own destiny. It will come down to the lastday this Saturday when we host South Division rival JonesCounty.”

Tuesday, Co-Lin travels to Miss. Delta for a non-divisiondoubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Southwest 3, Co-Lin 2

“We didn’t score enough runs,” said Case. “We had chances earlyin the first game. Credit Taylor Riggs, he pitched well. So didBrandon Jones.”

Riggs posted the win in eight innings with 4 strikeouts, 3 walksand 2 runs allowed on 6 hits. Jones (2-6) worked 7.1 innings with 3strikeouts, 1 walk and 3 runs allowed in 8 hits. Working in reliefwas Brock Campbell who had 2 strikeouts, 1 walk and allowed1hit.

Co-Lin’s Cameron Logan smashed a 2-run homer in the top of thesixth to tie the game at 2-all. Jarred Rogers singled twice.

For Southwest, Steven Bowman led with a double and a single.Singling twice was Scott Daniel.

Co-Lin 6, Southwest 1

“I though we came back in the second game,” stated Case. “We hadsome better at-bats. We got some big hits. We were able to scoresome runs.”

Powering the Wolves in the second game with 3 singles wasRogers. Jeff DeBlieux drilled 2 singles. Matthew Freemandoubled.

The Bears got a double and a single from Scott McDaniel. BubbaBoggs and Taylor Humphries doubled.

Posting the win was Jonathan Grace (3-3) with 3 strikeouts, 1walk and 1 run allowed on 7 hits. Working the final 12 innings with1 strikeouts, 1 walk and 1 hit allowed was Trent Hartzog.

Cory Sarnathus took the loss, working 3 innings with 1strikeout, 1walk and 4 runs allowed on 6 hits. Pitching in reliefwas Bubba Davis for 4 innings with 1 strikeout, 2 walks and 2 runsallowed on 1 hit.
