Harold W. Godbold

Retired Captain Harold W. Godbold, 92, a resident of Magnolia,died Aug. 19, 2010, at Beacham Memorial Hospital in Magnolia. Hewas born Oct. 13, 1917, in Brookhaven. He was the son of Earl andWillie Pepper Godbold. He was a member of Centenary UnitedMethodist Church.

He was a retired captain in the United States Army, having servedin World War II. He was a C-47 pilot in the Army Air Corps and flewhelicopters in the Mississippi National Guard. After returning toPike County, he served for many years as manager of WilliamsWholesale Grocery Company until retiring in the late 1980s. Whileattending high school at McComb, he was the quarterback for a statechampionship team.

Mr. Godbold loved to travel, garden and cook. He traveled to placeslike Africa, Switzerland, Russia and many other places.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, MaxineSimmons Godbold; his second wife of 10 years, Dorothy B. Godbold;and two sons-in-law, Larry C. Thompson and Bobby W. Sterling.

He is survived by two daughters, Lynn G. Fahner, of Pleasant Shade,Tenn., and Elizabeth G. Sterling, of Magnolia; three stepchildren,Gaye Starnes, Spike Simmons and Mark Simmons; his sister, EvelynMaddox, and husband, Dr. George Maddox, of Durham, N.C.; fivegrandchildren and their spouses, John and Kathy Fahner, of PleasantShade, Jeff and Stephanie Fahner, of Indianapolis, Ind., Joy andMichael Malone, of Lenoir City, Tenn., Jill T. and Bobby Robinson,of Smithdale, and Nic Thompson, of Magnolia; eightgreat-grandchildren, John Fahner IV, Matthew Fahner, NicoleRobinson, Justin Robinson, Luke Malone, Lucy Kate Malone, MaddieFahner and Jack Fahner; and his special friend, Becky Izard.

Visitation is Sunday, Aug. 22, at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home inMcComb from 1 p.m. until services at 3 p.m., with Dr. Dave Hartsonofficiating. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery in McComb.

Pallbearers will be John Fahner, Jeff Fahner, John Fahner IV, SpikeSimmons, Justin Robinson and Glen Dillon.
