Loyd Star Hornets tour North Pike; Enterprise, West Lincoln at home

The Loyd Star Hornets invade North Pike Junior High School’sfield Friday night to square off against the North Pike Jaguars innon-division football action. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.

In other Lincoln County action, Richland visits Enterprise and WestLincoln will conduct a homecoming game hosting Mt. Hermon,La.

Brookhaven and Bogue Chitto have open dates this week.

Last week, Loyd Star knocked off Bogue Chitto 35-28 in the PossumBowl, while North Pike ambushed McComb 40-18.

Loyd Star (1-3), coached by Randall Huffman, is pumped afterwinning their first game of the season. After studying game film onNorth Pike, Huffman talked about the Class 4A Jaguars who are3-1..

“North Pike has a bunch of good athletes,” said Huffman. “They do alot of things very well, both offensively and defensively. We havegot to play our best football to compete with them.”

In the win over Bogue Chitto, Marquis Sims sparked the Loyd Starrunning game with 13 carries for 118 yards. Marquis Hayes provided70 yards on 12 carries. Sims returned a kickoff and Hayes returneda punt for touchdowns.

Josh Butler who had 11 tackles, led the Hornet defense. Corey Funkwas close behind with 9 tackles and a forced fumble.

North Pike, comes into Friday’s game 3-1 on the season. TheSummit-based Jags racked up 359 yards total offense against aMcComb defense that had allowed just a combined 42 points on theseason.

In the win over McComb, the Jaguars’ offensive damage came fromRevis Butler who accounted for 270 yards offense. The seniorquarterback rushed 11 times for 151 yards and was 8-of-14 passingfor 119 yards.

A.J. Jefferson had a stellar night for the Jaguars. The 6-2,225-pound junior recorded seven tackles, three quarterback sacks, apass deflection, caused a fumble, recovered another and was 4-of-6on extra-point attempts.

Enterprise (1-2), coached by Josh Garrett, lost to Cathedral 76-50last Friday. The Fighting Yellow Jackets regroup to host theRichland Rangers at Harry Cole Field this Friday.

Richland (1-3) fell to unbeaten McLaurin 7-2 last week.

After studying film on Richland, coach Garrett talked about theRangers. “Richland has some big players and I expect them to usetheir size to run over us. Our players will have to play hard andkeep to basics to compete.”

In the loss to Cathedral, Cody White finished the game completing 9of 17 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Brad Prather had 97receiving yards on four receptions.

Chance Boyd and Prather led the Jackets defense with 6 tacklesapiece. Jedd Moak, Trent Sandifer, Tim Martin and White provided 4tackles apiece. Maverick Smith and Sam Furr recovered a fumble.Leighton Jordan made an interception.

West Lincoln (0-3), coached by Chris Calcote, will have Homecomingfestivities this week as they prepare to host the Mt. Hermon Yellowjackets of Louisiana.

The Jackets (0-1) lost to the Salem Wildcats 45-8 last week.

After intense studying of Mt. Hermon game film, Calcote commentedon the Jackets. “They have a young, athletic team starting theirsecond year in high school football under the direction of firstyear head coach Gwynn Holmes.”

Calcote mentioned that his team is nursing some injuries but willbe ready to play this Friday. “We are getting prepared for Mt.Hermon and our kids are excited and motivated to win their firstever homecoming game.”

West Lincoln has been playing varsity football since 1998.

In the 41-0 loss to Pelahatchie, sophomore running back Deon Mooreled West Lincoln offense with 111 yards on 24 carries. TylerRoberts completed 1 of 4 passes for 15-yards and one interception.Jonah King rushed for 19 yards on 11 carries and caught a pass for15 yards.

Defensively, Grant Montgomery and Garrett Rushing led the Bearswith 4 tackles apiece. Austin Montgomery and Roberts recover afumble.

Last year, West Lincoln beat the Jackets 39-6 at Mt. Hermon in therain.
