BA Cougars win opener

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars outscored Oak Forest 15-7 in thethird quarter and managed to hold off the pesky Yellow Jackets fora 53-47 victory Monday night in Brookhaven Academy’s annual HolidayClassic Tournament at John R. Gray Gymnasium. The hosts held anarrow 25-24 halftime lead.
In other tournament action, beginning with the girls, the DeltaLady Raiders smashed the Oak Forest Lady Jackets 72-47, the EastRankin Academy Lady Patriots defeated Kirk Academy’s Lady Raiders51-38, the Bowling Green Lady Bucs edged the Parklane Lady Pioneers36-29 and the Leake Academy Lady Rebels walloped the Trinity LadySaints 67-43.
In boys’ action, the Trinity Saints destroyed the Bowling GreenBucs 84-63 and Kirk Academy’s Raiders slipped by Parklane45-42.
Tournament action continues today with sevens games, starting atnoon with the Centreville versus Marshall girls. Delta’s LadyRaiders battle Bowling Green at 1:20 p.m. In the nightcap, Leake’sLady Rebels entertain ERA at 4 p.m. and Brookhaven Academy’s LadyCougars face Prentiss Academy at 6:40 p.m.
In the boys bracket, Marshall entertains Trinity’s boys at 2:40p.m., Leake battles Kirk at 5:20 p.m. and in the finale ERA’sPatriots battle against Central Private at 8 p.m.
BA 53, Oak Forest 47
The Brookhaven Academy Cougars (6-4) had a successful night indefending their home court. The Cougars provided two players toscore in double digits. Sophomore forward Gage Posey led BA inscoring with 17 points and collected 5 rebounds. Brock Smithcontributed 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
“Our main objective, after the holiday break, was to start findingways and doing whatever it took to win games,” said BA coach DaleWatts. “We struggle throughout the game in trying to get ouroffense and defense established. Oak Forest has a very goodteam.”
Drew Misita pumped in a game-high 23 points to lead the Jackets(5-9).
“Coach Dale Watts has an excellent and well-coached team likealways,” said Oak Forest coach Bo Coxen. “It is always tough tobeat Brookhaven Academy on their home court.”
The Cougars return to action Wednesday night at 8 p.m. as they waitfor the winner of the Leake/Kirk game. Oak Forest plays Parklane at1:20 p.m. Wednesday in the consolation bracket.
Delta 72, Oak Forest 47
The Delta Lady Raiders had five players to score in doublefigures. Morgan Shook pumped in 17 points. Whitney Corbin chippedin with 14 points. Forrest Corley added 13 points. Mallory Dyboltand Marley Anne Scheile contributed 12 apiece.
Shelbi Ballard was the leading scorer for the Lady Bucs with 11points.
Trinity 84, Bowling Green 63
Tip McKenzie knocked down a game-high 33 points to lead theSaints.
Russell Perry led the Bucs with 19 points.
ERA 51, Kirk 38
Kaitlyn Coghlan was the leader for the Lady Patriots with 24points.
Allye Lyndy provided 19 points to lead the Lady Raiders.
Bowling Green 36, Parklane 29
The Lady Bucs was led by Makayla Dykes with 11 points.
Chandler Parker was the top scorer for the Lady Pioneers with 11points.
Leake 67, Trinity 43
Jenny Wilbanks provided the hot shooting hand to lead the LadyRebels with 32 points.
Madelyn Cross led the Lady Saints in scoring with 17 points.
Kirk 45, Parklane 42
Sayle Roberts pumped in 13 points to lead the Raiders.
Tyler Stutzman knocked down 17 point to lead the Pioneers.
