A Lincoln County man convicted of manslaughter will betransferred into the state’s custody for a decade.

Andrew Hammond, 22, was sentenced Friday morning to a 20-yearprison term, with 10 years suspended and five years of post-releasesupervision for the March 2010 shooting death of 45-year-oldWilliam “Bubba” Thompson. A jury found Hammond guilty ofmanslaughter at the conclusion of a two-day murder trialWednesday.

“Justice was served,” said Assistant District Attorney DianeJones.

In addition to the prison sentence, Judge David Strong orderedHammond to pay court costs, the Thompson family’s medical andfuneral expenses and a $5,000 fine.

“I thought it was fair,” said defense attorney Joe Fernald. “Ithink the judge did the fairest thing he could do.”

Hammond struck down Bubba Thompson on Friday night, March 12,2010, at the home of his girlfriend, 22-year-old Gena Thompson, thedeceased’s daughter. Witnesses said Bubba Thompson, who objected tohis daughter’s relationship, arrived at her mobile home at 2254Harbor Lane to search for Hammond, who hid in the back bedroom.

When Bubba Thompson came down the hallway, Hammond fired a shotfrom his .40-caliber Glock 23 pistol that struck him in the rightflank and eventually killed him.

The defense tried to make the case that Hammond fired inself-defense as Bubba Thompson lunged through the bedroom door,using a prior altercation on Nov. 12, 2009, as justification thedefendant had reason to fear for his safety. It also argued, basedon Gena Thompson’s testimony, that Hammond had lived at the homefor months and had an expectation of safety and a right to defendhimself with force.

The prosecution argued Hammond laid in wait for Bubba Thompsonand murdered him as he approached in the hallway. The prosecutionalso used Gena Thompson’s testimony that Hammond had been sneakedinto the home and documents listing the defendant’s address as hisparents’ at 677 Virginia Ave. to disprove his right to bethere.

There were conflicting testimonies given in the courtroom.
