The Brookhaven Farmers Market is expanding to include Tuesday afternoons beginning June 5, organizers said.

The market will be open inside the Godbold Transportation Center from 3 to 6 p.m.

“Last year we tried afternoons and it was either blazing hot or pouring down rain,” said Lincoln County Extension Director Rebecca Bates.

The farmers market will be held on Tuesdays at the center and on Fridays in Railroad Park until the market concludes later this summer.

Bates said the farmers market is so far doing well after its opening week.

The farmers market will be the site of a Dairy Day celebration June 8. Dairy farmers and others will be on hand to discuss the industry.

“Dairy was such a huge industry [in Lincoln County] for so many years,” said Bates. “It’s just a great tradition to celebrate the industry and the products they produce.”

The festivities will include free dairy products and a petting zoo. Tyler Bridge will perform from 11 a.m. to noon. The Mississippi Beef Council will also be present to give out recipes and samples.

There will also be a dairy dessert contest. Entries can be turned in to the chamber of commerce office from 10 to 10:30 a.m. All entries must contain at least one cup of dairy and prizes will be awarded in two categories, youth (17 and under) and adult (18 and older).

Dairy Day sponsors include the Lincoln County Board of Supervisors, Lincoln County Farm Bureau, the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association, Pike County Co-op, Magnolia Electric Power Association, Kentwood Co-op, Southern Ag Credit and the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce.
