A lifelong resident of Bogue Chitto, Mr. Brumfield was a veteran who served with the U.S Army in WWII in a Military Police Division. He was a member of Montgomery Baptist Church. Prior to suffering a major stroke in 1988, he enjoyed many pastimes including hunting deer, turkey, coon and fox sometimes with his dogs. (The dogs earned trophies in some hunting events). He enjoyed riding horses in his work. He was an associate with the livestock industries. Many knew him at the former Summit, Fernwood and other livestock barns, where he also was sometimes auctioneer, and hauled livestock.

He never knew a stranger and would regale folks with stories of the past. In taking his family places, he would come back a different way from the way he went, and hardly ever went the same route twice.

He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in their sports and other activities. He was a role model to them and he tried to help family and friends any way he could.

He enjoyed listening to and singing gospel music. After becoming bed ridden due to stroke complications, he enjoyed watching baseball games on television. When having visitors, he would entertain them with stories. The family wishes the stories had been recorded. He never complained about not being able to do things for himself or of being bed ridden. He was happy to be in his home in his final days.

Preceding Mr. Brumfield in death, were his parents; his loving wife of 66 years, Aileen Posey Brumfield; his daughter, Vickie Joy Brumfield; and his sister, Helen Brumfield Hartfield and her husband, Philip.

Survivors include two daughters, Gail Brumfield of McComb and Bonnie Johnston Cook and husband, Ross of Bogue Chitto; one brother, Hyland Wesley Brumfield of Bogue Chitto; two granddaughters, Lemmie Johnston Anderson and husband Jason of Norfolk, Va., and Katelyn Johnston of Summit; one grandson, Earnest Clifton Johnston and wife, Kayla of Bogue Chitto; one great-grandson, Zachary Byron Johnston of Bogue Chitto; one nephew and eight nieces, numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews, other extended family and many friends. He also leaves behind his dog “Emily” who went with him everywhere, when he was still able to do a little work on his home place.

Pallbearers will be Ernie Johnston, Richard Moak, Keith Johnston, Greg Hoggatt, Bill Cook and Butch Hewitt.

The family wishes to thank his caregiver Melissa Upkins for her care and support, the nurses and doctors, medical personnel and others who assisted in caring for him.
