Co-Lin Men’s Tennis dominates Hinds

WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln men’s tennis team earned their first win without dropping a match on Wednesday with a 9-0 win over Hinds. The women’s team dropped a hotly contested match, 6-3, to the Lady Eagles.

The teams were meeting for the second time in less than a week. The first matchup in Raymond saw the Co-Lin men winning 7-2 and the Hinds Lady Eagles 7-2 victors.

Dwain Perkins and Graham Watson defeated Devonte Thomas and Aaron Gray 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, then defeated both players in singles 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 3 singles respectively.

The No. 2 doubles team of Brock Smith and Josh Smith stormed back after falling behind 7-4 to win 9-7 over Julian Johnson and Jonathan Bethea. Brock Smith defeated Johnson at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4 while Josh Smith beat Melvin McNair 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6.

Coleman Carraway and Brandon Nettles defeated McNair and Pete Bethea 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. Nettles dominated Austin Pevey at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1 and Carraway completed the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Bethea.

In the women’s match,  Co-Lin picked up a win at No. 2 singles with Courtney Watts beating Brittany DeCamp 6-4, 6-4 and avenging a three set loss to her last week. Melody Smith continued her mastery of Ruby Drake beating her again 6-2, 7-6 at No. 1 singles and the final win came at No. 6 singles with Caroleah Brister winning the first set 7-6, then Cayla Fox retired.

Smith/Watts lost to Drake/DeCamp 8-2, Savannah Brister/Allie Dear lost 8-6 and Caroleah Brister/Erika Dear lost 8-5. Savannah Brister lost her singles match to Kelly Cadson 6-3, 6-0, Allie Dear lost to Jenneast Lofton 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 and Erika Dear lost to Reagan Chisholm 6-4, 7-5.

Both teams return to action for their final regular season match on Monday, when they host Jones County beginning at 2 p.m. in Wesson.
