Pearl River blanks Co-Lin in division soccer action

WESSON – Pearl River Community College remains undefeated in women’s and men’s MACJC South Division soccer action after shutting out rival Copiah-Lincoln’s squads here Wednesday.

The Lady Wildcats improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in division play with their lopsided 10-0 victory, while the Wildcats are now 4-1 and 3-0 after their 3-0 win over the home standing Wolfpack. CLCC’s women remain winless at 0-8 and 0-4, while its men are 1-7 and 0-4.

In the women’s game, The River jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead at the half. Hailey Furlan of Bay High got things rolling with the first goal off an assist by Katelyn Williams of Ocean Springs High, while Jessie Cochran of George County High made it 2-0 off a penalty kick and Furlan followed with a third goal off a free kick.

Later in the first half, Courtney Lechner of Pascagoula High padded the Lady Wildcats’ lead to 4-zip when she scored on a header off a Furlan corner kick, while Rachel Jacobson of Pascagoula High added a fifth goal for PRCC off a corner kick. Taylor Hunt of West Harrison High ended the first-half scoring with back-to-back goals — the first off an assist by Laken McBroom of Resurrection Catholic High in Pascagoula and the second off an assist by Cassidy Hotchkiss of Biloxi High.

In the second half, Delaney Gustafson of Ocean Springs High scored The River’s eighth goal off an assist by Furlan, while Natalie Lechner of Pascagoula High made it 9-0 off a Jacobson assist. Courtney Lechner scored the game’s final goal off a Williams assist.

Furlan, Hunt, and Courtney Lechner finished the game with two goals a piece, while Cochran, Gustafson, Jacobson, and Natalie Lechner had one a piece. Furlan and Williams had two assists each, while Hotchkiss, Jacobson, and McBroome had one a piece.

In the men’s game, the Wildcats led 2-0 at the intermission when Trey Wesson of Gulfport High banged in a goal off an assist by Gavin Helton of Gulfport High, while Romar Smith of Gulfport High added the second goal off an assist by Erik Legier of Biloxi High.

Helton and Mark Mangum of Brother Martin (La.) High scored second half goals — both off assists by Elijah Troutman of Ocean Springs High.

The two teams eye a South Division rematch Friday, Oct. 17, when Pearl River plays host in Wildcat Stadium with game times at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men).

Co-Lin returns to action Saturday when they visit MACJC South Division rival Mississippi Bulldogs to tangle with the Bulldogs. Game times is at 2 p.m. for the women contest and 4 p.m. for the men.
