The Brookhaven Police Department has arrested one person and is searching for another in connection with a shooting incident Thursday afternoon.
BPD responded at 3:07 p.m. Thursday to a call of a person with a gunshot wound at King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell said that Sherard Green, 19, was shot in his left calf while trying to enter his grandfather’s residence on Union Street.
Green is from out of town and was being dropped off by a friend at the residence. Bell said Green noticed a Chevrolet Cobalt outside the house that he did not recognize. He proceeded to call his uncle, who lives in town, to identify the vehicle. Green’s uncle was not able to identify the vehicle. Green said he walked to the back door and as he was entering the dwelling was shot by Ricardo Smith, 21, of 311 Virginia Ave., Bell said.
Police were led to Smith through a brief description from Green, identification of the vehicle and public help, Bell said. Smith was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and burglary of a dwelling.
Bell said the police department is looking for a second perpetrator who would have been driving the car. The car is in custody of the BPD and Bell said they are retrieving warrants to search it. The incident is still under investigation.
