A benefit concert in honor of Summer Conn Prestridge will take place at Trinity Park Saturday to raise money for her fight against ALS.

Local musician and event coordinator Tony Norton said Prestridge is a single mother of two girls who was recently diagnosed with ALS, a rare nervous system disease that weakens the muscles and impacts physical function.

“We will be raising money for her and her young daughters,” Norton said. “The life expectancy of an ALS patient is two to five years. The money will go toward modifying her house, buying a van and food, paying her bills and to take care of her daughters in the coming days.”

The concert will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Park — connected to The Church of the Redeemer in downtown Brookhaven — and will consist of eight acts. The following musicians will perform:

• Shaw Furlow

• Cole Furlow

• Mississippi Goodnight

• Julie St. Ripling

• Tony Norton

• Daniel Brogden

• Charlie Hewitt and the Hewitt Family Band

• The Cotten Bridge Band

Admission to the family friendly event is free and concessions consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to the concert. Donation booths will be set up throughout Trinity Park, and volunteers will also walk around during the concert to collect donations, Norton said.

“This started when one of our classmates started a Facebook group, talking about Summer and her diagnosis,” Norton said of his fellow Loyd Star class of 1999 graduate. “This is the first of hopefully many fundraisers we can do for Summer.”

“There are some very generous people in this town,” Norton said. “There are a lot of very kind people who don’t mind giving their talents for a good cause, and we thank them for that.”

Norton said Trustmark, a corporate sponsor of the concert, donated money for concessions and the use of two outdoor tents. If any company is interested in making a donation or sponsoring another event for Prestridge, Norton said he would be interested in speaking with them.

T-shirts reading #alwayslovestrong will be sold at the concert and all proceeds will go toward Prestridge’s medical expenses, Norton said.

“Summer is just a very good person that doesn’t deserve this — I guess nobody does — but when it hits that close to home you’re aware,” Norton said.
