Brookhaven seeing good voter turnout, officials say

Local voters are turning out to the polls, according to Lincoln County Circuit Clerk Dustin Bairfield.

“All six of our voting wards were open at 7 a.m. and we’ve had a good, steady turnout so far,” Bairfield said.

Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann released a primary election day update earlier today saying that his office was receiving reports of low voter turnout across the state.

“Governance begins at the ballot box,” Hosemann said. “The primary today and the general election in June will determine the future of our communities, so I hope we will see traffic at the polls pick up into the afternoon.”

Bairfield said Brookhaven hasn’t run into that problem today.

“Just looking at the polls,” said Bairfield, “there are lines at each one.”

As a reminder, voters must cast a ballot in the precinct associated with their current residence. Polls are open until 7 p.m. Voters standing in line at 7 p.m. are entitled to vote.

Problems at the polls or other questions should be directed to the state Election Hotline at 800-829-6786 or the circuit clerk’s office at 601-835-3435.
