Trial set for DUI death suspect

Kevin Haynes, of Brookhaven, charged with two counts of driving under the influence resulting in a death, will appear before Judge David Strong for trial on Nov. 7.

In 2015, on Valentine’s Day, two individuals were killed in a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 55 in Summit.

Cpl. Brandon Fortenberry, public affairs officer for Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop M, said troopers responded to an accident at 6:32 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015. A 2012 Dodge Avenger driven by Haynes, 32, had been traveling north on I-55. Near mile marker 21 in Summit, a 2013 Freightliner with an empty box trailer was parked on the right shoulder. The Dodge drifted across the white line and came into contact with the trailer, with the car eventually coming to final rest in the median.

Danielle Harris, of Brookhaven, and Courtney Maxwell, of Hazlehurst, were passengers in the Dodge.

Both Harris, 24, and Maxwell, 24, were pronounced dead at the scene. Haynes was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center with some injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler, 55-year-old Jack Brunson, of Texas, was uninjured.

Cleanup and crash site investigation shut down the interstate until 11 a.m.

An obituary for Harris identified her as a Chicago native who was a graduate of Brookhaven High School, Copiah-Lincoln Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. She was a certified nursing assistant. The obit lists Haynes as her “significant other.”

Although Fortenberry said at the time that MHP was unsure what caused the car to drift over the white line, a warrant was later issued for Haynes’ arrest — on June 13, 2016, almost 16 months after the incident — for operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor resulting in death, two counts.

Haynes was ordered by the court to undergo a psychological evaluation in August 2016. On more than one occasion, his attorney was unable to attend court due to personal health issues, but Haynes’ trial has been scheduled for Nov. 7 before Judge David Strong. A date for a motion hearing has yet to be determined.
