GREENVILLE (AP) — Authorities say a Mississippi man shot a pregnant woman he was dating five times, fatally injuring her baby, and later shot himself.

The Delta Democrat-Times cites officials in a Thursday report saying 23-year-old Jonathan Driver was in critical condition after shooting himself as police approached him.

Washington County Coroner Methel Johnson says Dayton Carey was born three months early after his 23-year-old mother was shot Sunday, and died at a Jackson hospital the next day. The newspaper didn’t report the woman’s condition.

Assistant Greenville Police Chief Michael Merchant says New Albany police helped find Driver at a hotel. He’ll be taken to Greenville when he’s stable on charges that may be amended to murder and attempted murder. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer who could comment.
