Lawrence Co. opens season with win over Brookhaven

The Lawrence County Lady Cougars opened their slow-pitch season on Thursday with a 10-3 win over Brookhaven High School in Monticello. The game was a region opener for both teams.

Lawrence County led 1-0 after the first and 2-0 after three innings before BHS tied the game up 2-2 in the top of the fourth. The Lady Panthers then went up 3-2 in the top of the fifth. The Lady Cougars exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to take control of the game.

LC piled up 21 hits while Brookhaven had seven hits in the game.

Kyja Willis led the BHS offense with a home run while Lulu Cook and Kyla Henderson added a double apiece. Meg Foster had a pair of hits for coach Mandy Vinson. Layla Woodall and Emma Campbell also hit safely for the Lady Panthers.

Ashley Holden, Sydney Pevey, Skyler Speights, and Gracie Hartzog had three hits apiece for coach Marc Howard and Lawrence County. Pevey and Raylee Ready hit a double apiece and Speights smashed a homerun. Abbey Peavey drove in two runs as did Hartzog and Ready. Abbey Peavey, Mollyd Davis, and Abbey Turnage had two hits each. Tara Ervin and Anne Claire Sistrunk also hit safely for LC.

LC travels to face the powerhouse Neshoba Central Lady Rockets on Tuesday. Brookhaven will host North Pike on Tuesday.
