Hornets sweep Sacred Heart; Lady Cats blow out St. Joe

Here’s a look at area basketball action from Tuesday night.

Loyd Star

For the second time in a week, the Loyd Star Hornets took a pair of wins over the Sacred Heart Crusaders with a sweep Tuesday on their home court.

Coach Gene “Moochie” Britt and his Lady Hornets moved their record to 8-4 with a 54-15 win over SH. When the two teams met one week ago in Hattiesburg, Loyd Star won 59-58 in overtime.

Tuesday night, the Lady Hornets jumped out to a 19-2 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Senior forward Taylor Smith led LS with 11 points. Ta’maria Townsend added nine points while Carly Beth Wallace and Kelsie Foster chipped in eight points apiece. Carson Hughey scored five points and Alyssa Leggett added four points. Calia Beard, Marleigh Bullock and Madison Falvey all scored three points each.

In the boys’ game, the Hornets won 44-30 and also pushed their record to 8-4.

Senior Stephen Mills led LS with 10 points. Reese DeHart and Julius Smith each scored seven points apiece for coach Seth Britt. Will McCullough added six points while Peyton Morse and Nathan Calcote scored four points each. Wyatt Hodges and Corey Martin added two points each for LS.

The Hornets wrap up the 2019 portion of their schedule with home games tonight against Pisgah.

Bogue Chitto

Bogue Chitto split a pair of games Tuesday night at home against St. Joseph. The Bobcats dropped a close 47-36 loss to the Bruins while the Lady Cat were winners by a 55-24 final.

Lincoln Collins led BC (4-6) with 14 points and six rebounds. Miguel Ferguson and Tra Mackabee chipped in five points each for coach Robbie Walters. St. Joe led 18-12 at halftime.

Jay May also scored four points for BC. Tay Nelson and Zach Upkins each added three points apiece and Cameron Williams scored two points.

The Lady Bobcats (10-2) got 16 points and five rebounds from Katelyn Palmer in their big win. DeAnna Edwards added 12 points, eight steals and five rebounds. Fayth Magee scored eight points, grabbed three steals and handed out five assists for BC. Kamilah Clay scored six points, Anna Brumfield chipped in four points and Kylie Windmiller scored three points for the Lady Cats.

Rylea Carter, De’Mya Porter and Kaitlin Poole rounded out the BC scoring with two points each.

The Bobcats host West Marion tonight.

Wesson

The Cobras were swept on their home court Tuesday by 4A North Pike. In the girls’ game the Lady Jags took a 46-16 win over the Lady Cobras (6-5).

In the boys’ contest coach Rusty Newman and his Cobras (3-6) trailed 24-22 at half before losing a close 48-46 final to NP.

Wesson travels to West Marion on Friday.
