Loyd Star hosting Taylorsville in playoff opener tonight
The Loyd Star Lady Hornets are back on their home court once again and looking for season win no. 20 when they host Taylorsville tonight for a MHSAA 2A State Tournament opening round game.
Loyd Star (19-8) lost 62-51 to West Lincoln Friday night in the Region 7-2A championship game on their home court.
Senior shooter Carly Beth Wallace led LS with 22 points and sophomore point guard Aubrey Britt chipped in 19 points for the Lady Hornets against WL. Senior forward Taylor Smith scored five points, senior Ta’Maria Townsend added three points and junior Calia Beard rounded out the scoring with two points.
After the game Wallace, Britt, Smitha and Townsend were all named to the All-Region team.
Coached by Angela Moore, Taylorsville (20-8) is a strong no. 3 seed from Region 5-2A.
“They’ve got a good record and two nice inside players that we’ll have to work to slow down,” said Loyd Star head coach Gene “Moochie” Britt.
Senior Kolten Lakeney averages 18.2 points per game for the Lady Tartars and fellow senior Whitney Keyes chips in 10 points per night.
“We’ll need to force them to try and score from the outside and we’ll need to do a good job rebounding,” said Britt.
Taylorsville traveled to Lincoln County back on Dec. 21 and came away with a 40-33 win at Bogue Chitto.
The Lady Tartars came close to the top two teams in the region a couple times, losing to second seeded Puckett 57-51 at home and 54-49 at top seeded Bay Springs.
Tipoff tonight at Loyd Star is scheduled for 6 p.m.
