The city of Brookhaven brought in $431,407.60 in sales tax diversions for the month of February. While down significantly from January’s receipts of more than $524,600, the amount is up slightly from February 2019 by $1,500. The year-to-date total of $3.86 million is also higher than one year ago, when it was $3.8 million.

Statewide, city diversions totaled $33,709,626.33, up by $586,000 from one year previously, though less than January’s $42.3 million. The year-to-date state total was $300.77 million, up by approximately $3.4 million from one year earlier.

Though the month-to-month total is less than the first month of the calendar year, the city’s receipts are in line with past years’ performances, and show an increase from the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

McComb and Cleveland are the two municipalities in the state closest in residential population to that of Brookhaven — slightly more and slightly less, respectively. February diversions for McComb were $416,492.54, down nearly $44,000 from the previous January. Year-to-date total for the city was approximately $55,500 less than one year prior.

January receipts for Cleveland were $304,561.34, a rise of $19,400 over January 2019. The city’s year-to-date total was just shy of $2.64 million, an increase of $140,000 over the previous year.

Across Mississippi, 33 cities have larger populations than Brookhaven. Of these, 14 brought in lower tax receipts than Brookhaven. They were Canton, Clarksdale, Clinton, Gautier, Greenwood, Grenada, Hernando, Horn Lake, Long Beach, McComb, Moss Point, Natchez, Ocean Springs and Pascagoula.

The capital city of Jackson, with the largest city population in the state, brought in $2.068 million for February, down $98,000 from the previous February; and the municipality’s year-to-date of $18.392 million was down more than $700,000 from last year’s marker.

Six other cities brought in sales tax receipts of more than $1 million for January, including Ridgeland, the state’s 16th most populous city.

Forty-one towns or cities brought in sales tax receipts of less than $1,000 for January, including D’Lo, Eden, Falcon, Snow Lake Shores and Paulding, which brought in $43.31 for February, and $414.42 year-to-date, less than half its year-to-date total in February 2019.

The town of Satartia, with a population of nine persons, brought in $83.14 for February and $791.65 for the year, down steeply from its year-to-date of $2,009.89 last year.

Sales tax data is provided by the Mississippi Department of Revenue. Sales tax has a three month cycle. In Month 1, tax is collected by the retailer.
