Senior spotlight: Bizot, Mooney made big plays for Cobra baseball

Last season, the Wesson Cobras found some postseason magic as coach Seth Lofton and his crew got hot in the 3A playoffs and made it to the third round before being eliminated by West Marion in a close three-game series.

After dropping back down to 2A after six seasons in the higher division, Lofton and his team were looking forward to seeing how they’d stack up in Region 7-2A play this year.

That never happened, though, as COVID-19 ended the season before division play was set to begin.

Wesson isn’t losing many players to graduation — there are just two seniors on the roster — but the importance of that pair can’t be overstated.

Kenner Bizot and Aaron Mooney were a huge part of that playoff run last season. The pair has wielded big bats at the plate and pitched some huge innings for their team through their careers.

“Aaron and Kenner both worked very hard to get to this point in their careers,” said Lofton. “I am thankful that I had the opportunity to coach them — both are special players and special young men. “Their leadership will be missed as much as their on-field performance.”

Kenner Bizot

The son of Kenny and Jeni Bizot, Kenner plans to attend Copiah-Lincoln Community College next year where he’ll receive multiple academic scholarships, major in chemistry and biology and play baseball for the Wolves. A strong, tall pitcher who also led his team with the highest slugging percentage last season, Bizot was a Daily Leader All-Area selection as well as a MAC 3A All-State pick as a junior. As a senior he was also a Daily Leader All-Area pick in basketball.

Aaron Mooney

The son of Todd and Scarlett Mooney, Aaron plans to attend Copiah-Lincoln Community College next year and major in nursing. Lights out on the hill as a pitcher with a sub 1.00 ERA as a junior, Mooney was a Daily Leader All-Area selection last year and also led the Wesson soccer team in goals scored as a senior.
